VFACTS new vehicle sales report May 2016
Link http://www.wheelsmag.com.au/news/160...port-may-2016/ The winners and losers in the Aussie sales race for May. AUSTRALIA’S new-car market was up 3.6 percent for the month of May, with 96,672 cars sold compared to 93,372 in May 2015. The increase in sales was led by growth in private SUV numbers (+5.5 percent) and an increase in government spending on commercials. The Hyundai i30 was Australia’s most popular car for the third month in succession, while Toyota remained on top as the best-selling brand. SUV sales are rapidly closing in on passenger car numbers, with 36,230 SUVs moved in May compared to 38,222 passenger cars. The best-selling SUV was the Mazda CX-5 (2117 sales). The Hyundai i30’s continued success (3771 sales) came at the expense of the evergreen Toyota Corolla (3333) and Mazda 3 (3243), while the Holden Commodore (2255), VW Golf (1753) and Toyota RAV4 (1695) rounded out the top six passenger vehicles. Yet Australia’s appetite for utes sees the Toyota Hilux (3675) as the second most popular of all vehicles, with the Ford Ranger in fifth and the Mitsubishi Triton winning eighth with 2021 sales. Picture removed Toyota’s market leadership remains intact, and while it leads by an enormous margin, the rest of the market is quietly chipping away at the juggernaut. Toyota’s 80,261 sales so far this year is a meagre 48 vehicles ahead of its sales at the end of May 2015. That’s a 0.1 percent improvement on last year, and far less than the overall market’s 3.8 percent growth. Toyota still has plenty of breathing space to its nearest rival, Mazda. Operating out of its shiny new head office in Melbourne, Mazda posted solid 7.7 percent growth and has notched up 48,518 sales year-to-date to build up a margin of 6468 cars over third-placed Hyundai. The Korean brand threatened to snatch the podium spot from Holden in 2015, and has since clearly shaded the local brand, which in fourth place trails Hyundai by 5416 units year-to-date. Ford, in fifth, has made leaps and bounds in 2016, with a substantial 16.4 percent improvement year-to-date, however almost half (47.3 percent) of its 6584 May sales were of a single model – the Ranger (3285 sales). Impressively (or not so, depending on you view), the Australian-made Territory remains Ford’s second-best seller, despite its slow decline, down 21.8 percent compared to 2015. Picture removed Holden sales continue to fall, with an 8.0 percent year-to-date dip after slow May sales. The Holden Commodore was its best seller (2255), while Cruze sales are down 26.1 percent in 2016. The shining lights for Salmon Street are its SUVs: Captiva is up 5.8 percent this year, while the smaller Trax is rocketing along with a 30.7 percent increase. Star performers for May include Volvo, with its XC90, a Wheels COTY finalist, up a whopping 271.9 percent year-on-year, helping the brand reach a 51.0 percent growth rate so far this year. Alfa Romeo (down 57.4 percent) and Chrysler (a 61.0 percent decline) were among the worst performances for May. Mercedes-Benz continued its dominance of the premium marques, with 17.6 percent growth year-to-date and to be the 11th most popular of all brands. BMW posted even great growth, at 27.7 percent. This was led by the BMW X5, and supported by the BMW X1, launched late last year, hitting the streets in serious numbers for the brand. Audi sales are up 8.0 percent, but its growth is slowing. At the end of 2015, Audi was snapping at the heels of BMW, finishing less than 2000 sales behind its arch rival, yet in the first five months of 2016 BMW has already extended that margin to 2611. Picture removed Dieselgate has also hit VW local sales, down 4.2 percent year-to-date. VW can still walk tall with its Amarok and Transporter improving, and a strong performance from the excellent new Passat (up 40 percent, with the Passat Alltrack up 76 percent), but it’s negative territory for almost every other VW model. Top 10 best-selling vehicles in May 2016 Rank Model Sales 1. Hyundai i30 3771 2. Toyota Hilux 3675 3. Toyota Corolla 3333 4. Mazda 3 3243 5. Ford Ranger 3115 6. Holden Commodore 2255 7. Mazda CX-5 2117 8. Mitsubishi Triton 2021 9. Volkswagen Golf 1753 10. Nissan Navara 1752 New-car sales for the first five months of the year have increased 3.8 per cent, to 469,571.

So Commodore is Holdens best selling model and Territory is Fords second best seller.
The loss of these vehicles is really going to hurt these traditional rivals. The Commodore is a great package(with a crap V6) and I'm a big Territory fanboy. The big issue I see is that both manufacturers don't have realistic replacements for these cars. Holden will bring some 4 pot or V6 bum dragger and Ford are expecting to sell a lot of Everests. The problem with the Everest is the high entry price. Ford are saying they won't bring the Edge or Explorer to Australia because they have the Everest. I don't think everyone wants a $60-80,000 4X4 and I certainly don't want a diesel. Families looking for a large suv are going to buy the $30,000 Captiva over the Everest simply on price. I think the issue with the Commodore is maybe they've made it too good and kept developing it over the last few years, where the Falcon has really dated and just faded into oblivion. Nervous times ahead for the two former power houses. |

Top Ghia..Ford should have engineered the 6 for the Everest...given buyers a choice of a 6 or diesel...I bought a Captiva LTZ in May, looked at other SUV's and nothing comes close to it for specifications at that price...contrary to opinion, build quality has improved..comparable SUV's are $10k more...where would the Edge fit in ? Ford have Kuga ?? The Explorer is Territory size. ? October will be interesting,,,,,

If I hadn't been able to pick up a new Territory on Ford employee pricing I would have looked elsewhere. I think the edge would fit in between the Kuga and the Everest. I think the new Explorer(which looks fantastic) would be similar in size to Everest. Maybe it's slightly larger. Then there's Expedition which is probably more 200 series big but is more big SUV than serious off roader. Bring them all I say. As well as the F-150 F-250 F-350 and F-450 because out in the sticks these little tuk tuk trucks just don't cut it. Plenty of people towing really big vans and just pulling the guts out of these toy trucks. |

Maybe, Australia should allow left hand drive vehicles on the road ,as well as right hand drive?? As elsewhere in the world??????

Cool. Could be my next car. But I had a look at the specs on the Edge and on paper it didn't look real good. But sometimes cars outperform their specs(Fiesta ST). Whatever it is I hope it's really good. |

I think the diesel thing is a little overblown. Guys buy their little tinfoil Thai trucklets and think that they have to get their macho diesel.
I've driven a petrol V6 Hilux and it's a much better drive to the diesel for the type of driving many will do. Also a heck of a lot cheaper to maintain and significantly less carcinogenic for the driver and passengers and other road users. |

If they brought out a petrol turbo territory, I would snap one up straight away.

Brazen..most diesels have a particle filter or ad blue (Everest has ad blue)!carcinogens are greatly reduced. Technology will clean up diesel emissions.

The biggest question I have about diesels is why their drivers have to leave them running when they get out of the vehicle - that's just obnoxious, especially outside a building with the fumes blowing in. There has been so much advance in turbo petrol, including fuel economy, the "need" for diesel is very limited nowadays, especially in passenger cars.

Can't speak for the Hilux, but comparing the diesel alternative to the two petrol cars we own it looks like about 2 l/100 difference. So on the rare long trip of maybe 500 km that's about $12 difference. Big whoop.
Balanced against higher purchase price, more rigorous and expensive servicing requirements and parts costs for diesel. And then there's that rattle. I don't deny there's still a valid role for diesel, but not in typical passenger cars nowadays.

Yep, if they did the FG turbo set up with 270 or 310kw I'd be all over it like white on rice. The SY turbo never grabbed me as the power delivery was just too flat. I'm sure it would come alive with a decent tune though. |

Yeap we are about to go Territory or Everest and Im shattered there is no Titanium Turbo.
Who gives a flying rats about emissions..WTF...TDi is far superior for larger vehicles, there is a reason why the territory has lived this long and it isnt because of the Barra n/a. In saying that we will be cheating with lease a car, so the Barra Territory can work for me as I dont give a hoot about consumption etc. But if I want to buy it at the end I will get a Tdi....just need to decide whether we go pov pack Everest or top sec Territory. I dont know if I want to deal with diff bushes down the track, but I am not impressed with the Ad blue BS either.

To add to That Kluger, CX9 & Pathfinder, have no diesel option. 2.7 ecoboost in the Territory would have been a ripper.

Even had somebody doing it in a Golf outside an industrial unit. I had to ask him to turn the thing off as we were all getting gassed inside (and that was before what we know now about VW diesels)! Don't get me wrong, I'm not against diesels being used where appropriate. But seriously not everybody needs them and in cities they're just on the nose, period.
