Northern Territory opens licence question

Question without notice...

Have been looking through the NT Transport website but cant find anything there...... So does anyone know if there are "auto" restricted licence in the NT?

Friend of mine is moving and she only holds an automatic car licence...

The NT has an unusual rule in regard to "auto only " licences. Having spent two years as a Licence Testing Officer (LTO) with the MVR here is what i know.

If you do your licence test in a manual car and pass you will go onto your "P"s. You will have to display a P Plate for the first 12 months then it does not need to be displayed. You will still be required to be alcohol free for the first 36 months of your licence then after that you will have the 0.5% BAC.

If you do your test in an Automatic car and pass you will go on your "P"s. Your licence will be marked as Auto only for the first 12 months. After 12 months the auto only requirement drops off the licence. Legally you can drive a manual without ever having driven one. You will have to display a P Plate for the first 12 months then it does not need to be displayed. You will still be required to be alcohol free for the first 36 months of your licence then after that you will have the 0.5% BAC.

The above however does not apply to MR / HR trucks. Do your truck test in an auto and legally you can only drive an auto truck.

In summary, your friend may have to stay on Auto only for a period of 12 months then it should drop off but give the MVR a call and ask for the licensing Co ordinator

Edit: just finished checking the website and under 25's must display P Plate for 24 months and over 25's display for 12 months. I am unable to find the section relating to the drop off of the auto after 12 months.

I believe NSW has the same rules regarding Automatics.

If you get your Red P in an Automatic car, you cannot drive a manual, however once you get your Greens you can drive whatever you want.

Ahhh the good old days [not that long ago] where you could sit on 160kmh, go as fast as you want, and the only issue was wildlife and grey-beards in caravans, and the fuel gauge plunging downwards rapidly all the time.

This is correct, I dont agree with it though. I dont see how changing the colour of the P makes you suddenly able to drive a manual.

It doesnt, but its not like driving a manual is exactly hard, so maybe they had someone show them how?

Seriously, driving a car with a manual gear box is hardly rocket science.

In Vic. If you got your Auto licence, once you are off your P plates you are not restricted to just Auto.

This is a question I've had for quite a while now, how does it work in every state (& territory)?

Personally, I've looked through the SA Transport site and found nothing to say there are any rules regarding it. My only indication is that my license starts with "AT", but that might just be coincidence.

In Queensland if you pass a test in an automatic vehicle then you are restricted to automatics. Your automatic licence is however a learner licence for a manual vehicle, and you can go for your manual licence at any time, and when you pass you don't need to pay for a new licence. I know someone who has had an automatic only licence since 1977. Handbrake hillstarts are still part of the automatic licence test.

in SA there are no rules about it. well with trucks there are but not cars.

Neither is driving in general... BUT... People still manage to **** that up.... -_-

Back on track... I've always heard (being a resident for 15 yrs now)
that if you only get your auto licence, thats all you can drive, but thats
only what i've heard on the grapevine.
