What could have got these cars a defect

hi everyone

noticed a few defected cars on the upullit stock list and wondered what would have likely got these defected when they didnt look like they had much wrong with them and what would likely reason be why people didnt fix them

faded or bubbling pant or different colour panels should be a problem if theyre all in good condition and no sharp bits

Would some have been on lpg and tanks were out of date

also would registered owners have been likely to have been known to police and they decided to find something or younger police taking over and want the latest and best

I went to Egypt and the preferred taxi of choice was mid 70's Peugeot 504. In cairo I was walking around from a random train station and happened upon a bloke who imported them from OZ and NZ. In his yard were two wrecks - front and rear. Was going to make one out of two. They would keep these pick-a-part cars going for decades.

what about if they look rough but run and drive well.



also would registered owners have been likely to have been known to police and they decided to find something or younger police taking over and want the latest and best.

I recall they had a lot of 70's Lada's when I was there nearly 20 years ago, seems not much has changed

They don't look like Victorian defect notice stickers (Canary yellow with large "DEFECTIVE VEHICLE" text on the sticker). Most of those cars look quite old and in most cases the cost of repair, registration, insurance and if selling it getting a RWC would far outweigh the price you could get for a private sale.

Most of those cars would not sell for over $1000 privately. So you'd need to consider these costs:
- $800 for yearly registration
- $300-$1000 for insurance
- $130 for RWC ($1k-2k for repairs to get up to RWC standard)

To keep these cars running it would cost more than the value of the car. It wouldn't be worth it. OR you could sell it to Jollys for $200-$500 and walk away with some cash in your pocket. I'd say most of the cars that weren't written off that are there are probably sold to Jollys due to the cost of repair outweighing the cost of the sale.

What about if it looked rough but ran and drove really good and it was the paint peeling or different colour panels but otherwise was complete and nothing missing

What would those cars likely have got defect for

Bald tyres, dick-head driver! Cracked windscreen. Missing valve caps, broken mirror!

If an owner has neglected the car to the extent that huge sheets of paint are peeling off/ panels replaced with other colours etc, there is an extremely good chance that other maintenance items have been skipped. To help you understand, it's a bit like buying a house that has never been looked after. There's a good chance you're going to new a kitchen, bathroom, carpets and painting.

More likely those are unregistered/abandoned notices on the windscreens rather than defect notices.

they are all old pos cars that are basically worthless

probably all had broken taillights, blinkers and numerous other things that made them unroadworthy and not worth fixing

tow fees to get one home after purchase would be uneconomical

mechanically I seriously doubt they'd be 'good',

I'd suggest reading through the roadworthy requirements from Vicroads below and determining based on those standards what you think may be unroadworthy on these cars.

Those aren't defect notices on those cars.

Main things to look for:
- Tyres
- Rust (damaged/ sharp panels/ compromised structure)
- Lights
- Exhaust/ emission issues
- Fluid leaks

Correct, they are stock/lot stickers or similar.
This is a defect notice, aka yellow canary



These are normally placed on the passengers side windscreen. I may or may not have had a few of these over the years

No it wouldn't so long as the panels aren't rusting. Have you been defected for something? Is that why you're asking?

I’d tip they weren’t otherwise good,

Bald tyres, oil leaks, braking and suspension issues as well electrical faults etc will all cause defects

They’re all POS cars and I’m guessing the faded paint is only part of the neglect they have suffered
