Ok guys i thought i read about this a while ago but not too sure on the subject...
If i purchase a 2nd car other than a historical or classic car am i able to get discounted registration for not using the car as a daily driver? I have called vic roads and the young chick said that all cars require a full paid rego unless its a club historical, classic car I just wanted to double check the matter thanks if there is a link, can someone point me in the right direction |

All cars need to have full rego in Victoria if you want to legally drive it on the road. Unless exempt by Vicroads such as club rego. Not sure of any links.

The only time you'll get a 'discounted registration' if you are;
- On the pension. - On a HealthCare/Concession card. otherwise, you're paying full rego for full 12 months. Health Care/Concession allows to do 6months at a time, at cost of about $260 for 6 months. $260 x2 = $520. full 12 month = $630 .. Decent saving.

Ah, the ancient question that motorcyclists usually ask..."I have three bikes, why do I have to pay full rego for them all? I can only ride one at a time."
A system that a guy in our club came up with was this: if you have several cars/bikes, you pay normal registration for one vehicle, but for the others, you pay a small fee, which means they are all listed on your registration under your name. So how do you stop people just loaning them out to mates? Easy. You have one transferrable licence plate, which is fitted to whatever vehicle you choose to drive at the time. You also sign a statutory declaration saying that you will not use it for fraudulent purposes, and the penalty if you are caught trying to somehow fiddle the system is to have all the registrations cancelled, and to be absolutely excluded from the system. The government wouldn't be done out of money, as the vehicles aren't normally used on the road anyway...they mostly sit in the shed like the two old bikes I have, unused and only ridden around the yard now and then. If I could use them on the road, businesses would benefit as they would need to be serviced, they'd wear out tyres, they'd consume fuel, etc. The government would be getting a fee for something that normally they'd get nothing from. Of course, it sounded far too much like common sense for a government to take it up... |

They don't make much money from road users. They obviously need to make it somewhere.

One good thing about being over here in the UK is that I can cancel my rego any time and get a refund for the remaining months.
Also the MOT (roadworthy) is valid for 1 year and when I want to re rego the XC's I just go to the post office with my insurance certificate and MOT and pay the TAX and off I go again. Pretty good over here. Also if the car was built prior to August 1972 it is TAX exempt. I never paid TAX on the XA when I had it. Wayne |
