Default Good Whisky's

What's some good cheap whisky?

The cheapest I found is the 6*440 Black Douglas scotch and cola.

only around $15 (got it for $13 once).

Is there anything in this price range that is significantly better?

I'd probably spend up to $20.

Not sure what the blue costs now upwards of $500 odd a bottle i think, but worth a nip if you ever get the chance, I also knocked of a very old whisky that we found in our dad place ( hidden in the wall cavity ) and it was like a smack in the face similar to the KFC add, byt good fun, but followed by a few bottles of red, it was no longer fun.

ok no 1 what is your price range. getting the best whisky for your money is easier then getting a good cheap whiskey!!!
2. What kind of whiskey do you like? (i can name atleast 6 off the top of my head and each is VERY different!) I prefer single malt scotch whiskey. ie your blue label...

Before a whiskey becomes err..."nice" it is atleast 12years old but even then they are pretty rough.
Here are a few you might want to check out.
Bowmore Isle of Islay Single Malt Scotch
Glenfarclas Single Malt Scotch Whisky 1974 only 150ish a bottle and very nice. consider that blue is 250 a bottle and is not as "old" as this one it's good value for money.
Glenfiddich 30 Year Old
Glenfiddich Special Reserve 12 Year Old

But if you ever get the chance to try Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vintage 1945
have a go...but try to get someone else to buy it for you...prices start at about $11,800 per bottle.

But i think if you want true value for money a gorgeous whisky to have a go at is Old St Andrews Clubhouse Scotch Whisky it's about $50 a bottle, and is quite nice.

They have different different flavours but the basic principles are the same although generally speaking Scotch Whisky is distilled twice and Irish Whiskey is distilled three times. The Irish Whiskeys tend to be more mellow and refined IMO.

If you're mixing, do not get single-malt whiskeys. They are for drinking on the rocks.

If you're mixing, a crap whiskey will not bother you all that much. I think Johnny Walker is overpriced. I see them as the Nike of whiskeys.

Jamiesons (Irish) is usually about 30 dollars but is a good drop. Decent to shoot or mix.
I find bourbon far rougher and really only good for shooting. I also do not like Cola at all, so Dry Ginger Ale is all I mix with generally. Scotch is much better than Bourbon for mixing with that.

Pre-mixed are not cost-effective. However, they are convenient.

Dude im not even sure if that stuff is technically scotch... scotch flavoured alcohol maybe

Grab a bottle of jamesons or chivas (nothing too fancy, just good booze!), couple of glasses, a bagful of ice and enjoy. Save the coke for the kids.

yep, i agree 100%. better off drinking less if it means you're drinking quality stuff. chivas ftw and you can get it cheaper than bottleshops if you buy it online.

just like wine, some people don't care and just buy a cask of the $10 stuff. i wouldn't drink that stuff if it was free.

it comes down to your own taste though. drink enough of the cheap stuff and you won't really care about taste. indulge yourself with something a bit higher up your price range until you find something you actually enjoy, then price will come second.

You guys do realize that there is quite a bit of scotch whisky distilled in Tasmania and exported to Scotland.
Apparantly we have much better water here, less pollution etc and no chernobylish glow in the dark stuff.....

A friend of mine was involved in this and I have a few bottles. It is GREAT....

Your Johnny blue label is a blend, not a pure malt.

Yeah That Jamesons and Chiva's sounds right for my price range.

Are they 700ml?

Also all the alcohol I usually drink tastes crap (exception of lager and smirnoff twist).

I had some Johnnie Walker red label scotch once which was decent but yeah how much is the Jamesons and chiva's from bottle shops? Still $30? Is it common to find?

Johnnie Walker Red is the crap stuff in the Walker Range. Extra 10 will get you black.
Jamesons and Chivas are common as hell. Easy to find. Jamesons is 30 bucks. I had a bottle a few days ago. They are all 700ml.

Also, lager sucks. Drink ales. More flavour, less chemicals...actually, avoid CUB and you'll get a decent drink.

Yes I know, I've even been to it . Apparently if it weren't for the stupid taxation laws and other nonsense back in the early days of the settlement, they could've ended up with a very large distilling industry in Tas.

Sorry but it can't be called SCOTCH whisky unless it is distilled in Scotland much the same way Bourbon must be distilled in the USA!
