FORD and Toyota are concerned the "buy Australian cars" policy - rushed through by the Rudd Government to make up for its damaging changes to Fringe Benefits Tax - has been interpreted as "buy Holden".
Government sales for both Ford and Toyota have fallen as Holden Commodore deliveries surged by 15 per cent last month. The two rival car makers believe some government departments have misinterpreted the policy announced in desperation by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in the lead-up to the election. "We're concerned that some of our (government) customers may have misinterpreted the 'buy local' campaign," said Toyota Australia spokeswoman Beck Angel. "Some of Toyota's longstanding fleet customers have expressed confusion on whether they are still allowed to buy our vehicles because of the campaign." Sales of the Ford Falcon fell to new record lows over the past two months and the car maker, which is closing its Australian factories in 2016, had to schedule 12 production down days. Ford spokeswoman Sinead Phipps told News Corp: "We hope the buy Australian cars policy will be evenly applied to all brands." SA Labor Premier Jay Weatherill has been one of the most vocal advocates of the "buy Australian" policy as he tries to shore-up taxpayer support for the struggling car maker and help save the 1700 factory jobs at Holden in Adelaide and several thousand more workers employed in the surrounding supplier base. Toyota says it will be "closely monitoring" its government sales figures to see whether there has been "any impact because of the misinterpretation". Holden spokesman Sean Poppitt declined to comment on the "buy Australian" policy and if the company thought it had advantaged Holden. The Rudd Government believed the FBT changes would affect "BMW drivers" but industry figures showed locally-made cars would be worst hit because of their reliance on government and fleet sales. For example, up to 70 per cent of domestic-market Toyota Camrys are sold to government departments at Federal, State and Local Council level. While much of the focus has been on Holden as it fights for survival, Toyota is in fact the biggest automotive manufacturer, employer and exporter in Australia, with about 2500 factory workers building more than 100,000 cars a year. Toyota and Ford vehicles built here also have more locally-made content than Holdens, figures supplied by the car makers show. Meanwhile the newly elected Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, has vowed to reverse the FBT changes. http://www.couriermail.com.au/busine...-1226722269516 ###

Interesting article. I remember that there was some local council saying they would only buy Holden.

I wonder if Falcon/Territory sales will jump a little with all the holdouts waiting on the Federal election result to can the FBT change.

I'd rather they buy Holden than fully imported. still would be nice if they supported Falcon/Territory.

Not sure what Ford are smoking. They don't advertise, they have announced to the world that they are killing Falcon and Terry, but Ford want more to buy? WTF? If I could smack'em over the back of the head I would.

15% increase is not that much for a new model.
I still shake my head at Ford announcing closure 3.5 years away. |

You could contribute the spike to it being a new model, once the initial rush is gone, the levels will be lower.

Governments won't buy an out dated FGII over a VF Commodore. Don't forget they work on resale percentage and as a vehicle becomes older the resale % of it worsens. They wont want FG's that will be outdated in 12 months time in other words.

Im ford through and through but if a Gov department can buy a better equiped/spec dunnydore for less than a falcon or boring camry then why wouldn't they by them? Ford and toyota need to adjust their product to be competitive or they will miss out. If I can go out and buy say a Samsung S4 for less than I can get an Iphone3 am I going to buy all my staff Iphone 3's? I dont think so. Quit the winging and fix the problem ford and toyota.

My council replaced all their falcon sedan vehicles (FG's) to Cruzes. The Falcon utes are also being phased out for Rangers.

As others have said, the FG is ancient compared to the VF, a fleet buyer amongst other things will look at total operating costs and that will include depreciation, the VF is almost certainly going to have a better resale over an FG therefore may get the nod on that. Could also be user chooser fleet cars in the govt and if your brand agnostic, the VF looks the better of the two. |

Seriously ...you need a smack over the head......ford has been advertising...with a big push to online media avenues.holden only just announced they feel they have to play catch up with the innovative ford marketing strategy. And with ford giving everyone 3years plus a revised model yet to come.....what makes you think it's close up shop now. Your one of the clowns thats probably spreading all this ford is dead crap. And yet the falcon and terri are world class......certainly class leading up untill the latest vf release. You don't have a clue about the real world and what ford have had to do knowing their future and lack of funds.

The eco LPI is only superior in Engine development & engineering. The rest of the car (which is what the been counters who organise the fleet purchases care about) is superseded by the VF in almost every aspect. The only thing the falcon really has over the VF is looks, and thats subjective. Performance of the FG2 might be better and driving dynamic may be on par, but you just get more car with the VF for your $$, you get gizmos and thats what people see as important these days. That and the fuel consumption.

On line media .... Another stroke of genius by ford Now you have to surf the net to find their adds Pretty hard to sell something if nobody knows about it. On line media coverage is amother medium but TV& Radio advertising is essential |

Not sure either but whatever they're smoking its left them completly brain dead. Recently I noticed demo Mondeo Titanium's for 30% off retail, (so Ford know how to seriously discount old product but for some reason don't think this applies to FPV product), I could buy a demo VF Calais V V8 with 20% off retail even though its only just been released...or a demo SRT8 for a similar level of discount even though its only been out for just over 12 months... so I asked my "friendly" Ford dealer what special run-out discount deal they'd do for me on the ol FG2 FPV GT-P...and got the answer back, no special deals Rodge. As you say, WTF are they smoking ?, do they really think their tired old now confirmed orphan product is just as compelling a proposition as it was when it was first released years ago Where did I put that Jaguar brochure...

I've been seeing more Territory ads on the television lately, could this be the strategy to
increase Territory production and sales while letting Falcon sedan sales fall to where ever? Would Ford cry if Territory sales leap to say, 2000 and Falcon sedans stayed at 500? I don't think so... |

What on earth are you smoking? Sure Ford are pushing the Kuga like it's going out of fashion, the Focus for it's infotainment system and a general, basic ad on the territory. But this thread is about the Commodore, and what's Ford's challenging vehicle? Yep, the Falcon. Please tell where we can all see advertisements for the Falcon.
