His home conversion is almost complete now. His conclusion is that the 2.0 engine and transmission fits well between the front frame rails of the Fiesta.
Ford has had the previous 2-litre in the previous Fiesta anyway. I wonder how different the Ecoboost engine block is from the previous engine. Is it just a re-worked cylinder head, now with direct petrol injectors (and turbo) or is it a complete new construction? The guy building this 'DIY' conversion is making his own engine mounts and driveshafts. Not sure if he has checked the Ford parts bin for suitable parts from previous Fiesta model. It is a cool project but with some hard work involved. For example converting any new Focus to 2-litre Ecoboost would been a lot easier, as the parts would be available over Ford's spareparts counter, and at wreckers in UK etc. How much heavier is the Focus than a Fiesta? On the other hand, I wonder how much would we need to lobby to Ford Australia to make them understand that engines should be bigger for the Australian market.. Cheers, |

That engine propels the Escape/Kuga from 0-60 (100km/h) in just over 6 seconds. What would it do to the Fiesta? I would love to find out!

I wonder if Ford has already this in the works for a potential Fiesta RS.

Fiesta ST with 1.6 Ecoboost has kerb weight of 1197 kg.
Focus ST with 2.0 Ecoboost has tare weight 1415 kg ( plus fuel ?) The 1.6 Ecoboost has 240 Nm from 1600 rpm onwards. (134kW at 5700 rpm). The 2.0 Ecoboost as mentioned already, 340 Nm from 2000 rpm onwards, (184kW at 5500 rpm). The Fiesta has inferior suspension compared with the Focus. Focus RS had the 'knuckle steer' front struts. Not sure if these are now on the ST? Fiesta has a torsion beam rear axle. Focus is fully independant. It should be possible to take a Fiesta ST (1.6 EB) and seriously tune it with larger turbocharger, much larger intercooler, etc. In my mind that would be less effort than to put the larger engine in the car. In particular it would not be so difficult for the software programming. Software for PCM and other vehicle systems is the main challenge of swapping in an engine like he is currently doing. The overall performance of Fiesta ST comes from less weight. Still interesting to see if his 2.0 home built version will do much better. |

Hi again,
Just for comparison.. BMW 135 has 450 Nm from 1250 rpm onwards, and 235kW. ( Kerb weight 1430 kg). ... and those numbers are before tuning them. |

I have done some digging on Bing. Look at this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_L_engine Mazda CX-7 sports were sold in Australia in 2010 -11 and -12 with their award winning 2.3L DISI Turbo (L3-VDT) engine. It had 380 Nm and 196kW prior to tuning. Guess what, Mazda L-series engine is now Ford's new Ecoboost engine. and the block should be the same as the Mazda L-engines and Ford Duratec 2.0 engine used in some previous Focus AND Fiesta XR4 (ST). What does this mean... Run off to Pickles /Manheim, or a wrecker, find a Mazda 2.3 Turbo engine from CX-7, and bolt it directly in to your Fiesta XR4 or Focus Duratec 2.0.. Should in theory be no custom driveshafts or engine mounts to be made.. It would still be a challenge to run the software. Maybe wire up both PCMs in parallel, in order to run the engine and read instruments etc.. Maybe the latest Ecoboost PCM will do the job with some re-programming. (I'm not going to build a car like this at the moment, just a thought of how to make a little Ford that can fly.) Cheers, |

I wouldn't be surprised if the previous ST contains all the parts needed to make this a bolt in swap and I bet all those parts were pulled from a stock Focus. Factories usually only play parts bin swaps anyway. The less engineering the better as far as production cars go. You should be able to use the ECM from anything that uses the 2 litre ecoboost if you didn't want to go aftermarket
