Default To sell or not to sell

After a bit of advice, I have my xf Fairmont sitting in a shed back home, it's unlicensed, and currently very unloved at the moment.

I had planned to just hold on to it, as its in pretty good condition, and may be a worthwhile investment one day.

I've just been offered $5000 for it, and am tempted to take it as I'm now not in a position to give it the care it deserves.

I think this amount is fair, but I thought I'd pick other people's brains before making a decision.

$5000...?

Unless you honestly believe it's worth holding onto, then sell.

That is a stupidly unfair amount, but if he is willing to pay that.....

Them or me?

I have not seen a stock XF Fairmont sell even close to that.

I only paid $400 for mine. Nothing was wrong with it.

DoreSlamR

How about a bit of a description of the car so that people can give you some better informed advice? Maybe even a photo.

IIRC is this a Ghia with very low ks?

From memory, there was a mint silver one on here that went for about $8k several months ago (maybe even longer).

If you can get $5k for yours, particularly as you don't have the time to 'give it some love', then I'd take it.

PS - It does look very nice...

I remember that one but forgot what it sold for.

I was leaning towards selling, but I half hoped the purists here would say no lol

Don't be one of these type of people who have a Falcon Coupe rotting away in a shed/backyard somewhere and won't sell because 'they are going to fix it up one day'.

Sell it if you are not going to use it. Let someone else enjoy it before it becomes a pile of rust dust.

Your car though.

The XF's were great cars.
If that's a Ghia, with EFI and a smicko interior, its definitely worth holding on to.

As for the offer, old Falcon prices have gone insane over the past year or so, and the D~Fs are not only the "next classics" they represent the Golden Age when Falcons ruled the roads.
$5k may well be on the generous side for an XF, but you should also remember that if you sell it now, it is highly doubtful you'll be able to buy back anything similar in the future. (Certainly not in such good nick.)

But it really comes down to whether YOU WANT it?
Will you be happy selling it now, and picking up an EF~L later on for your project?

If you are going to use it keep it, if not let someone else enjoy it imo.

i'd take $5k while you can, I turned down a nice Ghia last year because he would not sell for less than $1200. he sold it for $700 to someone else in the end and that was tidy just 1 spot of rust on the c piller
you might be holding it for a while to get more than $5k and by then it will have more rust and need more work to get going

Xe v8 Fairmont ghias and esp are worth good money and desirable. But the xf no way. They lost all the good stuff and slapped in that stupid digital dash and dumb looking mustang style lights at the back. I have owned almost every falcon owned but have nothing for a xf. Least desirable falcon for me. Long with the ea falcon but at least the ea looked nice.

Lol my brother has an XG ute in the backyard. Constantly telling me how much it is worth but all it does is sit there getting older and worse, unloved really. Seems to think it is of GT vintage for whatever reason

Sell it I reckon. Money in your pocket and it lives on with someone else.

Unless you have the facilities to keep it undercover and cared for, id let it go.

Its true that the prices for the X series have bottomed and are on the way up, but an investment? No.

Unless its rare, or you are intent on keeping it in mint condition for another 20 years, then I'd let it go.

Dont be one of those people who hold on to the hope that the car will be an "investment" and help you retire sometime in the never-never.

Did people think that the GTHO was an investment when they came out? 5 years after? 10 Years after? No they bought them drive & enjoy. Notin the hope that they will make money on them in the long run.

All this "investment" talk around cars only started happening in the late 90's when when prices started to go up. And really became popular around the mid 2000's when they peaked. And suddenly everyone got this idea: "I'll buy it because its an investment. It will be worth a squillion dollars ion 20 years time" It's is a load of BS.

If its not returning you money regularly, or going up in value considerably in 10 years, that's not an investment.

But, its your car. I've dropped an opinion, do with it what you like.

For what its worth though. If your looking to keep the car, keep it to keep it. Not make money, or do it up one day.

I used to drive one in high school. Thoroughly enjoyed driving that car.

I'd agree, don't look at it as an investment.
If you want an investment, take the $5k, buy bank shares, reinvest the dividends.

Questions is do YOU WANT the car? Or will you want it later on?

The other thing is how much is $5k worth to you right now? If you're saving for a house deposit or some such, then it might be worthwhile putting the $5k towards that.

$5k is a very good deal for OP, I know I'd take the money. A guy I know bought a decent XE and a very good XF mont for $500.

I don't think they're that special and in fact XD-XF's are almost as ugly as an AU1 Forte but whatever floats your boat.

I loved my XF but I doubt I'd want to hang onto it. If it's just going to sit unloved it will deteriorate and end up costing a heap to get it back drivable.
