Default Odd... need your opinions

Through the airfilter and induction thread here in the fiesta forum i noticed something different about my engine bay to the rest ive seen..
On the intake pipe, after the airbox... along the pipe that leads to throttle body i notice a small black pipe is plumbed into it.. Teki and mista fiesta confirmed that theirs also has this... and im wondering why mine does not.

The first pic is of my car (colorado red) notice it doesnt have the pipe :

Well it looks like only Autos have the pipe, and would like a better understanding of what it is.

might be a breather for the auto gear box or something, its better with out the pipe cause then you can twist the pipe around for a pod

next ''performance'' mod will be to replace the T pipe with a Y pipe in my cold air induction setup.
Then take my car to a good exhaust shop, and get them to make up a replacement pipe for the airbox to throttle body. one thats smooth and consistent size

For info (not trying to be a total smeghead or anything), MAF stands for M*** Air Flow (Meter), which measure the airflow into the engine by a few means, one is a spring loaded vane type, sitting in the airflow, that moves proportionally with the airflow. Another type uses a very thin heated platinum wire suspended in the air path that forms one arm of a Wheatstone bridge electrical circuit, the heated wire is cooled by greater airflow changing the resistance of the wire. But some cars don't use MAF Meters at all, they use...

MAP Sensors! Standing for Manifold Absolute Pressure, cars utilising this system rely on three inputs to work out how much air is being breathed by the engine. One is the inlet air temp sensor, another is the RPM sensor, and lastly a manifold vacuum pressure sensor (otherwise known as the MAP sensor). This sensor continously measures the pressure in the intake manifold, the pressure of which is dependant on RPM, throttle opening, and load. Because they don't have to sit in the airflow, they cause no restriction at all, unlike a MAF.

Just a little lesson to brighten your day, so next time we know that a MAF is an airflow meter! :
