Hey guys i have this 2.0l pinto for my MK2 cortina, now its ment to have a aftermarket cam and few other things done to the motor but not 100% sure.
now i cant figer out the timing got crank at TDC cam on its mark, the dizzy was way off its mark so turned the dizzy till it lined up with its mark at lead 1. now the book says to set ign to 6 degrees BTDC so i did that and wont fire. worked my way up to 16 degrees BTDC now but still wont fire. i know the motor works cos had it started when i first got it but would die after a couple secs was told it was cos the timing is out. also would i need to advance my cam if its aftermarket? |

The Cam will work based on the manufacturers settings - you only need to advance (or retard it?) once your at the point of chasing those last few HP. This needs ot be done on a dyno so you know what it is actually doing. Assuming you've got an adjustable cam pulley to make that happen?
Regarding your other problem - did you do anything with the Dizzy - assume the rotor button is still in there and the points gap is OK (Captain obvious but sometimes its the little things that stuff it up). If all you did was adjust the timing via the Dizzy and it worked before then you can only check all connections and double check them. Have you pulled a plug out and connected it to an ignition lead to see that it actually sparks?

was down at the shed today for a little while doing other thingss buts i had a play with the cortina points gaps fine tried with timing at 18 and 20 still not working but deffently sounds like it wants to fire now i will try go a bit more advanced when i go down next with some time at a guess it was at about 28 degrees advanced when it would fire but die after a couple of seconds so mabey i need to be a bit closer to that.
