Default Technology Huh?

Sitting here reading the forum and searching for classic cars, I had a look over my shoulder and the missus is on the facebook chatting to someone in the land of the long white crowd...

i proceed into the kids room, same deal, one on facebook talking to school buddies, the other one on PS3 network and the littlest one designing a fashion webpage of all things.

wow!

compared to 15 years ago, the whole house would be in bed by now or doing something completely unrelated to technology.

how far have we come and what's next?

We have flexible TV screens as well opaque computer laptops that you can see through.
Just wait till you buy your kids Xbox Kinect.
That even freaked me out with the whole "the future is here D:" thing.

This is why I don't have a facebook and I like to be around my mates in person rather than connecting via Internet or phone. The only time i do text them or call them is to arrange a catch up. AFF is different, because AFF has a purpose and is far more useful than facebook.

Not really, on a whole Facebook comes out on top. AFF is a hobby, Facebook organises lives.

No need to go over the top bud, to an extent he is correct it does enable people to organise their lives, just the way that phones organise lives, just another means of communication...
I enjoy Facebook, it is fantastic for keeping in contact with friends from other states. Yes I could phone them, but where I live I have minimal Mobile reception, not much of a fan of talking into my bedroom window...

Its easy to have a crack at technology but I wonder how many of the older blokes around here would still write a letter to someone in the mail.

this suggests that a life is without organisation if it is without facebook. hopefully the post should read - I let my life be organised by facebook. personally the 'walls' and opinions of 'friends' are so removed from my influences that they are but flakes of dandruff on my neck

You'll cave. Eventually. Naish WILL succumb to Facebook. Its so much easier to use on your phone than AFF..... ;)

Facebook has a purpose too. Its not as good as what MySpace used to be for picking up chicks, but it works to an extent!

Imagine this......What happens when the magnetic field finally dissapears and the solar flares start to destroy electric equipment including your car! People will be forced to go about thier day as if it were the 80's (or somthing like that? i wasent around then...also only old carby/mech deisel (non electric controlled) cars will be driving around, defintaly feel like the old days!)

If the device is there, it will be used. If its not there, you obviously cant use it. People adapt their lives...this is just how it is nowadays.. new tech is constantly being released to the public...21st century hey.

Iggy, stay away from Facebook.....nothing will consume and waste your time more...

I don't think that's entirely true. Regardless of whether your using Facebook to stay in touch or using an internet forum to answer posts, both are the same. You have to be online to use either to communicate with people over the internet.

AFF is a place where like minded people share info and knowledge on various fords that enable others to improve their own car and learn lifeskills to work on cars and save money. There is genuine good people giving genuine good advice, from car stuff to the housing market, and other little things like how to get rid of wasps or minor birds(advice central). You will most likely snag a great bargain through the FS section or a discount on high quality products or workmanship through a site sponsor. I have met friends for life on this forum, had support during my down times, including my dog dieing, my aunt getting cancer, my car getting nicked, et al. I've had a total stranger call me while drunk on the wrong tram in Melbourne at 1.00 in the morning and guide me back to my hotel. The same guy then put me up at his house during the AFF drag day. Thanks whoosha.
Facebook has torn two of my mates friendships apart through the whole "he said she said" rubbish, caused numerous fights from the wrong photo being posted, or people getting angry because they see a friend adding someone else as a friend they don't like.... I can see the point of facebook but I'd rather be a slave to aff than facebook.

We've come far?
I dispute that.

Yesterday, my parents spoke to one of the few caucasian neighbours left in my street who has lived in their house since 1956.

30-40 years ago, people would spend a Sunday helping each other out and after all that work was done, they'd get together for a cup of tea or coffee, and some light snacks. Community spirit was well and truly alive.

Nowadays, people coop themselves inside on Facebook and the like, nobody talk to anybody, and who the hell knows who your neighbours are?

Likewise with MP3 players - people plug in and disconnect from the world. The world itself has some of the greatest sounds you'll hear.

Mobile phones once again...people treat them as toys it seems. THey put their heads down, disconnect from their world and focus into downloading crappy apps for their iPhone and the like.

In my opinion, we've lost a lot as technology has developed.

I make it a point to see my neighbors and be friends with them. They like the fact I'm young and still indulge in the "old ways" of communication. I love going for a walk for no reason and enjoying the night air without the worry of having to keep up to date with whoever else is online. AFF I use quite a but but never for too long and usually in private.

people jumping on facebook, twitter etc and posting info about their every move to a heap of people they cant/dont manage to see in person whilst being too busy to interact with people in their own house ......... strange.

Spot on fella!

The whole Facebook thing is a joke and i cant for the life of me see why so many people invest such a large portion of their day to day lives on it.

last week i discovered my 12yr old son had a FB page and only because i found the deactivation email he had forgotten to delete.
I bailed him up about it as i have made it quite clear that i am against this type of communication.
Anyway, curiosity got the better of me and i decided to check his profile out to see what type of rock spiders he might have stumbled across.
Much to my relief i only found him to have contacted family and close friends, although many of these know my feelings about the whole FB crap, yet kept the fact my son has a page from me.
Whilst going through his list of friends i found a particular person from a small town we used to live in, this persons profile had dozens of other people also from the small town in their friends list.
I was left dumbfounded as i know all these people, have spent many a night in the towns pub with them and have seen with my own eyes that in the real world, face to face, they cant stand each other and fight like cats and dogs. Yet they proclaim to be great mates on FB...WTF

Im not so sure technology is the sole culprit though, i get the feeling that people just cant be individual anymore.
If there is a new 'craze' they have to be a part of it and follow like sheep for fear of what someone might think if they arent one of the crowd.

The magnetic field finally disappears?!

If grids are taken out by solar flares, the last thing you'll be concerned about is connecting to Facebook. People will be forced to go about their day looking for drinking water.

I've seem people lose it because they cannot send an email, when they could just get up off their bum, walk fifteen steps down the hallway, stick their head around the door, and tell them in person

100% true...
We have lost that community spirit, where we all knew everyone living in our street.... however, this spirit did linger and show itself during the Brisbane floods, where total strangers have appeared to help clean up peoples houses.
A rare moment were we all came together without fear or prejeduce..

Facebook like all those other "friends" program can be a danger certainly, but sometimes it can help keep people remain in contact once they have moved away from town etc....

A "feel good" story again related to the Brissy floods was a woman who asked all her freinds to start baking and making sandwiches to help those who had volanteered to clean up and those who lost home setc, spread to over 1000 people who then mobilised and spread around the brisbane area just to do their little bit.

However moments like these are rare indeed these days and im sure in the "olden" days when phones were the only way to communicate in a hurry, there wouldve been the same thing happening to get people power moving.

Just on this technology is great thing
There was a power failure in Brissie a while ago
No more in house emails,ect
People didnt know what to do
Communicate face to face, whats that !!!

Another was a coupla weeks ago
A lady posted on FB she was away for the night
A so called friend broke into her house
The footage from the house camera showed who it was
We are all save telling the world everything

Technology does have its good points and bad
