Default V8's and P's

Is there any way for me to get around the no driving V8 rule? I have been driving for 2 years and am on my red p's. Ive never been in trouble, received a fine or anything. I think its a bit unfair. My xf 6 cylinder car will run out of rego soon, and i wont be getting it reregistered due to tonnes of rust holes all over it. I have this other car but its a V8, my gf has a car too, but its also a V8. I dont have any more money to get another car.

Is there some way i can be allowed to drive it?

They don't affect you if you have your P's before the new laws come in.

it's still a stupid law, a P plater wont be allowed to drive a 302 XB falcon but they will be allowed to drive a BA XR6. you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know what's got more power and is alot quicker than the other

Yep, the rules should have been based on power to weight.

....Like in VIC. The only thing they have put some thought into instead of doing whats 'looks' right.......all V8's are bad! P platers here can still drive 351's in the right cars as cars on list are based on power/rate.

You might be able to get around it if you can show it is your only transport and you need it for work - that sort of stuff.

Check the RTA website or give them a call and ask - I remember reading on the forums a couple of weeks ago someone got an exemption - cant remember why though.

Good luck.

i think its capacity aswell, i asked Vic roads and they said the limit was 5 litres... which is why i could drive my XR8 and my 302 XD (as long as they dont check the stroke!) but its all changed for them now, no V8's turbos etc...

Well if it is, its crap really. I do beleive in restrictions but not blanket rules that make no sense. Last time I asked though (late last year) a P plater could drive a 351 LTD '76 model but not a fairlane 351 '76 because of power/weight ratio...........but I think it depends on who/when you talk to them

yeah, the thread was about my girl friends brother driving the v8. he can only drive it during work hours though. 8am - 5pm. if you have been driving for 2 years you should be on your green p's? you are excluded from the law if you were driving before the law was passed.

Yeh in vic it is no more htan 125kw per tonne, also no more than 3.5 litres capacity per tonne. Also down here you can be exempt if it is the only car you have available in your family

It all comes down to power to weight ratios. Thats the way it is in vic, go to the sydney equivalent of vicroads and you should be able to find all the details you need.

From memory you were allowed 100kw per tonne, and theres also litre capacity to weight. If it passes those you should be sweet.

Good luck

My mate drove a six wheeler two tonne HQ ute through his probationary period and that thing had a 350 chev under the hood!!!!!! Never once was pulled over. He drove it sensibly ( work gear was in the back ) and didn't bring attention to himself.

In vic if you can prove it is your only means of transport then you are half a chance. But it would want to be a good argumentive point because i bet that nearly every second young male tries it.
