Default Dont hate me .........im may be buying a VX SS

But im not selling my XR6T.
Well, after a few track days i've been bitten by the bug. And so has my dad. We are going to go halves and a buy a car for track days that we can build up into something for sprints and Dutton Rally type stuff. As I don’t want to crash my Falcon, and dad doesn’t want to drive it, I suggested we buy a VX SS. Why a VX SS you ask?? Well, I like them, they are cheep to buy ($20,000), RWD, and powerful. So in the morning im calling a guy about his SS he has for sale. Don’t get me wrong, I love Fords and when it comes to watching any racing (V8Supercars, Saloon Cars, Production Car etc...) its Ford all the way!! But when it comes to driving, i like 'em both.
Dad and I will go halves in the purchase and all mods etc that will need to be done. Dads already talking about roll cage and race seats. Take it easy old fella.
Anyhoo, wish me luck on the hunt for a suitable donor track car

I reckon they're a good looking car. How does performance compare between an AU3 XR8 and a VX SS? I just had a look at some on carsales.com, there does seem to be some good value out there. Good luck with it.

I'm not sure about handling, but hell you can get them flying for a reasonable amount of cash. Have you considered anything like a R32 Cryline GT-R? As much as I love big V8 grunt, if you're doing track/rally days I would think an AWD car might be a better choice.

Mattp: That interior is shocking!! We'll strip the interior out. Dad is already talking about roll cage and race seats. Im going to call a guy in the morning about going and having a look at his one for sale. Red 6 speed manual.

XRated: Yeh, i'd go for an R32 GTR but I have to consider dad too. We both agreed on the VX SS as a good starting point as it wont cost much to buy.

oh tht would be a nice buy an VX SS they look nice as well take a closer look at the price range you may able to get an VY for the exact same price

Wish I was in a position to be able to buy a track car! VX SS's arent too bad looking on the outside either, will look a bit weird with a fordforums sticker on it though! :

I been driving a VX SS 6 speed round for a while now and i love the thing.. its mildly tweaked.. rides on 20's and when u put the foot down it sounds like all hell is bout to break loose.. as well as traction.. LOL..

Best of luck to ya man.. nothing wrong with the old red lion IMO..

Why not just buy a VT series 2 if its only going to get hacked up and used as a track car? Same running gear, lower price tag.

Can get relativelly low km VT2 ss's for about 12 - 14k

They go well easy to work on do valve springs, LS1 edit, cai, exhaust and they go like the clappers, plenty of well priced parts around there a well supported engine.
With US using these engines there development never stops.

there are cheaper track day cars but dont let the fact that its a holden stop you...

My own advice on track cars is get the lightest you can... tyres and brakes cost less as does fuel and usually parts etc... the hard part is finding something RWD AND small

MX5, datsun 1600, escort, ae86 sprinter...

"if" and i mean IF there was a holden i would buy its def the SS noone can dispute the power and times these things pull on the qtr
if i didnt have what ihave i'd probably buy one myself.

as for the price im sure theres cheaper ones out there i saw one for 16k on a website
but hey good luck def gunna be a fun toy ;)

I am assuming here this is a dedicated track car for rally's, circuit work ect? Thus it doesn't need to be a practical car in anyway outside of the track (thus making you different to the majority who commute in their car monday to friday then take it to the track for some fun on Sunday) . Therefore why would you go for a relatively, big, heavy saloon that really only comes into its own down a quarter mile?

There is plenty of cheaper, lighter, better handling and thus much faster options (that still have V8's if that is a fun requirement for you).

that sounds like a crazy idea!! Its best to preserve the T and run the SS into the ground Seriously though, have you thought about an AU XR8 / T-Series? You can pick manual XR8's up for UNDER $15,000. The engine may not be as good as the SS (stock) but suspension (IRS) is fantastic....

Anywho good luck with what ever you get!

Good point, but it'll be stripped out. I watch production car racing and have seen some of the saloon types V8's at track days and think, "hell yeh, i want one of those!!". And now I have the opportunity to.

we owned a vx ss 6 speed manual mate, you CANT go wroung, those things are tuff as nails, just make sure it hasnt got the gudgen pin problem

$20k will get you a hell of a lot of track car, assuming it really is going to be a focussed track car. Again on the basis that it really truly is going to be a track only car, why not look at the Japanese auctions? You can get a genuine weapon that has already had MAJOR money spent on it, all the big name brands in aftermarket gear like suspension, brakes, lightweight racing rims, etc. etc. etc. and NO hassles with compliance and rego and the like. There is NO better value than something like this for the sole purpose of track days.

A big heavy sedan, even if it's had it's interior stripped out, just isn't the right tool for the job! People would be truly amazed at the value of what they can get from auction if it doesn't have to go through all the compliance crap.

yeah they arent a bad buy, my bro inlaw bought a low kms VXSS early this year from private seller in Sydney, only paid $18'000.

will make a good track car

Although it wouldn't be my pick for a track car, the VXSS is a reasonably good package. They have a solid driveline and the LS1 (if you get a good one) is a great working base. Personally after owning a RZ TT Supra I would be heading down that path or somthing similar (they are absolutely mind blowing to own and drive). Your average LS1 even tweaked will have a hard time keeping one of those slighly warmed over at bay with both cars going for similar money. Only issue with any import however is parts etc which is where the Holden comes out on top.

Id be happy with just about anything but dad doesn't want a turbo or a 4 cylinder (Hard man to please) and we both like the VX. I'll be driving to The Entrance tomorrow to have a look at a VX SS. Another cheaper suggestion is a VT Series2 (LS1) or a VX Exec M6 LS1. I'll see what’s around and have a look at a few car yard this arvo.

When you get one mate. Be sure to do the standard bolt on's. Being a track car gives you a lot of options regarding exhaust. Twin 3 inch through hotdogs with high flow cats. Should give good topend. Also an over the radiator cold air intake (OTRCAI) would be a good idea too. Finally get on to Steve Bennett from OZTRACK Tuning to sort you out a dual spark table MAFLESS tune. He uses EFI LIVE's custom operating system, that is the best available for LS engines. These mods will give you around 450hp easily.

VX SS is an awesome starting point.

Bolt on's and a Mild cam with have it thumping in the straight line, and some decent springs and shocks will get it to corner pretty well not to mention the weight reduction.

Its a good move Aeron. While it's great to have your own car fast on both the track and the street, it becomes very risky and expensive if anything should break or go wrong. I stopped racing my XR8 ute because of this, I had just signed up for a mortgage and couldnt afford any extra expenses

Getting a purpose car just for the track you can modify it how you want, comfort doesnt matter and the LS1 has huge modification possibilities, both in bolt on, heads/cam and forced applications.

Whats your primary focus, straight line or track work? If you say both your ultimately going to compromise one or both. If you insist on the boat anchor, theres usually plenty of ex-race cars minus engine deals around the place where all the chassis work is already done.
