Default Goodbye to the apostrophe!

FAREWELL TO THE APOSTROPHE

The apostrophe may die out because of sloppy grammar on social media, British researchers suggest.
Researchers from Lancaster University say online platforms such as Twitter, which limit the numbers of characters per post, mean users are getting into the habit of dropping punctuation.

Casualties include the possessive apostrophe in plural nouns - such as cats' paws --- or those which replace a letter, such as in couldn’t for could not.
Researchers looked at 100 million words and found casual and ungrammatical language had become more prevalent in the past 30 years!

THE WEST AUSTRALIAN.

To top that off, many University educated persons can't even spell properly. eg; there, their, they're.

There should be a general “rant thread” for grammar, syntax, spelling. Possibly including posts railing against Americanisation of Australian language.

Shouldn't that be grammar, syntax, AND spelling? :P

Who cares about that little squiggle thingy.

Does it really change anything?

What we should be ranting about is the inability of people to use the possessive case of a pronoun preceding the gerund.

Youse bloody peasants.

The apostrophe died out a long time ago In Australia on road signs when they decided to remove them.

A classic example of the confusion it causes is the Princes Highway which runs from Sydney to Adelaide along national route 1. Note "Princes' only has one s, not two. Therefore, it is the Highway that belongs to the Prince, not a Highway that relates to the Princess. From wikipedia:

Quote:
The Princes Highway as a named route came into being when pre-existing roads were renamed ‘Prince's Highway’ after the visit to Australia in 1920 of the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VIII and, after abdicating, the Duke of Windsor).
It amazes me as to how many pronounce it Princess and not Prince's.

But, when all the signage forgoes the apostrophe, it is no wonder people get confused.

According to this site, the decision to remove apostrophes in signs was made way back in 1966.

Quote:
A bureaucratic body ( the Geographical Names Board) decided back in 1966 that no Australian place names should contain apostrophes.

I was writing lyrically, Your Honour.

Nonetheless, it remained my suspicion that once posts and railing were mentioned, somebody would find offence.
