Hey guys, Im happy to say Ive got an AU now and an awesome one at that!
What have you guys done with your sound systems? The XR just has a factory system with the double din Head unit including a cassette deck, it has a stacker in the boot. Can these be replaced without too much trouble? Are they worth replacing with something nicer? Whats the deal with the steering wheel buttons? Can they be used on other systems? I was thinking about putting my other head unit in with a pocket for now and later on fitting an in dash screen below the head unit. What can be done with the speakers? They are funny shaped in the AU arent they? 4 by 7's or something? Can these be replaced with a conventional speaker or is it too much hassle? I dont want to go cutting holes or anything as you will probably understand.

5x7" in the doors. I managed to get some 6" in.
Regarding HU, apparantly you'll need an adapter to use the steering wheel controls on an aftermarket HU. Don't know the cost of that. I still use the factory HU. Depends on what you want Dan.

Definately dont replace the factory HU mate. Drop a PM to T2TL50, he is a car audio genius. His TL has the stocko headunit that he has done a bit of fiddling with and it sounds amazing. Definately have a chat to him before you do anything!

Stinger make an adapter, for the steering wheel controls to work with Pioneer HUs. (Avail. from Autobahn)
Alpine also make an adapter, for their headunits. All speakers are 5x7s, but definately replace the front ones, with a nice set of splits. You will need to make up a spacer for them.

watdiditellya Dan huh huh? ;) Factory decks are often as good if not better than aftermarket ones and there is no reason why you couldnt base a kick *** system around it, but in your case, it just looks FUGLY in that carbon fibre dash : **** it off and at least put your Sony in there with a pocket for the meantime. I'll fit it for ya if you want. |

also be aware that the head unit has a 25 watt per channel output. this means that if you get say 220watt speakers (like i had) the head unit doesnt have enough power to operate them properly. eventually they will blow at LOW volume (as mine did 3 times at about talking level).
this took a long time to find out from a few installers but eventually it was found to be the problem and if anyone doubts it then ask your local installer what they think. i would be interested to know. ive told a few other installers since about this and they have all agreed that it sounds right. |

I agree about the factory head units they look crap definitely need a change. I've change mine with an awesome Alpine number. Also the rear speakers are easy enough to mount a set of 6 x 9's from underneath instead of from on top like the factory ones. Alpine do make a unit to use your steering wheel controls with alpine units but it cost a fortune and i sorta figured stuff it! Have fun with the AU they are an awesome machine!!!! : :eclipsee_

i just purchased a 99 AU fairlane. It has the 6 stacker mounted in the boot in a lil pocket on the right.. and behind that looks to be an amp?
it has the premium sound system... if i ran some decent power cable could i run my cadence amp off the existing RCA's??(they feel like RCA's.. havnt had a good look yet..)(i have a pair of 15" JLs and a cadence monoblock from my previous 1990 fairlane) thanx fellas |

Thanks for the help guys, I actually found a thing that can integrate with the factory buttons and it works off infrared if the new player has a remote, you can tune the buttons to do whatever you want. I took my CD player to get fixed under the 5 year warranty so hopefully they dont fix it and I can get a nice new one!

Dan, from what I've read so far, you have a 2din headunit with single CD slot, tape player and a 6 stacker in the boot? Is this correct? I ask as I've never heard of AU1 with a CD+Tape+ 6 stack.

it was an option in some models. my forte didnt have a cd player, just the radio/tape/clock, $900 later and i had a factory 6 stacker/tape/radio BUT no clock as there is sposed to be one on the dash for those that have DD CD players. oh and they couldnt supply a loom for that either.

Nope, at the front is a double din unit with cassette tape and radio only, it has a stacker in the boot.

cassette radio in a double din slot.. with no clock that i can see as mine has it on the dash anyway.. and a 6 stacker in the boot and what looks like an amp mounted behind it (against the sidewall of the boot both behind the carpet mouldings that cover the inner arch and stuff.. on the right hand side.. |

I have the following in my AU2.
Alpine 9831 Diamond Audio M661's 6.5" Splits MTX 4x75wrms amp. MTX 250wrms Sub. This isn't "doof doof", but the sound quality is out of this world. Being 21, all my mates have stereo's in the car aswell, and although mine isn't as bassy as some of theres (yet), they can never shut up about how awesome the sound quality is. When I get back to Australia (currently working in USA), I'm gonna sound deaden the front doors and boot, which should also dramatically help SQ and bass. I can take some pics if you guys want to see what a top of the line Alpine head unit looks like in an Falcon. I love it And in regards to the front splits, looking through the windows isn't obvious that they are $999 rrp splits. |

I have another update, the stacker that is in the boot is not a factory one! The plot thickens.

I love my setup at the moment, but honestly the sub is going, move the amp to bridged 2x150wrms to power front splits, then looking a IDMax12 from an Alpine MRD1001. mmmm |

I havent found a pair of splits that can handle 60W nominal (RMS basically)... How much can yours handle cause my amp runs 65 rms so im looking for some other splits as i have a feeling mine might blow soon and im getting a new car hopefully in about 3 - 4 days... |

My splits are 100wrms each, and yeh I'll be giving them more then there rated power, but nothing a bit of gains tuning etc won't be able to overcome. There only getting like 75wrms each at the moment and there pretty loud with awesome SQ, the only reason I'm giving them the full 150wrms is because theres no need for me to buy another amp to power them, and would be silly for me to leave 2 out of the 4 channels doing nothing.
