Default VFACTS - August 2024

Deliveries were down in August.

Quote:
https://www.drive.com.au/news/austra...n-august-2024/

Australian new-car sales in August 2024: Second decline in three months as Toyota RAV4 leads VFACTS

New-car sales have hit the brakes for the second time in three months – after 14 months of consecutive growth – despite booming demand for hybrids that led the Toyota RAV4 to its fifth-ever monthly win.

Sales of new motor vehicles declined for the second time in three months in August 2024, as a long-forecast slowdown – backed by an economic downturn – finally appears to be setting in.

The 100,786 new vehicles reported as sold in August 2024 represent a drop of 8.3 per cent on the same month last year, after 14 months of consecutive sales growth – the longest in 20 years – came to an end two months ago.

It is based on VFACTS data published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the peak body for new-car makers in Australia, as well as data supplied by Tesla and Polestar to the Electric Vehicle Council, as these brands no longer provide sales results to the FCAI's reports.

Industry experts have long warned of a sales slowdown in 2024, as demand for new vehicles eased amid an economic slowdown – and car brands began to clear lengthy wait lists built up for in-demand models in the wake of the pandemic.

Since the start of this year, new-vehicle sales are still on record pace, with 836,065 deliveries reported – up 6 per cent on the first eight months of last year.

However, the decline in August has cut the increase from 7.9 per cent at the end of July, to 6 per cent today.

Toyota has previously forecast a slowdown in new-car sales in the second half of the year, towards an annual tally of 1.05 to 1.1 million vehicles – compared to more than 1.2 million last year.

The market decline in August was despite growing sales of hybrid vehicles, up 45 per cent last month compared to August 2023 – and up 96 per cent year-to-date – buoyed by improved supply for Australia's top seller of hybrids, Toyota.

The Toyota RAV4 was Australia's top-selling new vehicle in August 2024 for the second month in a row, and third this year – a model which, since June, has been only available to order as a hybrid.

It broke its sales record, posting 6712 deliveries last month – smashing its previous best result of 5913 sales in July 2024 – ahead of the Ford Ranger (5431) and Toyota HiLux (4496).

Only once before has a Toyota model achieved a monthly sales result this high, when 7532 HiLuxes were reported as crossing showroom floors in June 2022.

In contrast, electric-vehicle deliveries were down 15.6 per cent last month – though they remain up 11.6 per cent so far this year.

The decline was driven by Tesla, the top seller of electric vehicles, which was down 27.7 per cent last month, and is currently down 14.4 per cent year-to-date – despite slashing the price of its cheapest SUV by $10,000 in the first half of this year.

The RAV4 (6712 sales) led the Ford Ranger (5431), Toyota HiLux (4496) and Isuzu D-Max (2548) utes, ahead of the Ford Everest (2273) and Mitsubishi Outlander (2188).

It means four of the Top 10 best-selling new vehicles were based on a ute – the Ford Everest is the SUV version of the Ranger – while only one traditional hatchback or sedan featured in the Top 10, the ninth-placed Toyota Corolla (1855 deliveries, down 34 per cent).

Toyota remained the nation's top-selling new-car brand, with 21,490 sales reported – down 3.7 per cent – ahead of Ford (8890, up 12.6 per cent), Mazda (8263, down 2.3 per cent) and Kia (6093, up 6 per cent).

Subaru (3004) and Volkswagen (2790) missed out on Top 10 positions – ending the month in 11th and 12th – while BYD was less than 400 sales behind Tesla, with nearly half of the Chinese car giant's deliveries being the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid.

Electric vehicles accounted for 8 per cent of new-car sales – when Tesla and Polestar data is included – while close to one in four vehicles delivered was a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric.

Of the top 10 brands, only 4 posted sales increases, with Ford leading the charge.

Toyota 21,490 -3.7%
Ford 8890 +12.6%
Mazda 8263 -2.3%
Kia 6903 +6.0%
Hyundai 6211 -4.6%
Mitsubishi 5516 +11.2%
Isuzu Ute 3924 -16.7%
MG 3561 -33.7%
Nissan 3376 -20.2%
GWM 3148 +9.4%

Now that the new model has arrived, Mustang is back at the top of the sports car class. By some margin too, most likely from press vehicles for the media launch.

Sports cars under $80,000: Ford Mustang (296), Mazda MX-5 (81), Subaru BRZ (67)

Ram is really feeling not having that entry level model below $100k anymore.

I also wonder how the RAM will go once they drop the Hemi V8, which is on the horizon to be phased out for the Hurricane inline 6.

Looking at the breakdown in the sales figures and Ford actually was number 1 in 4 segments.

*4x4 utes - Ranger
*Large SUV under 80k - Everest
*Large Pick ups - F150
*Sports Car under 80k - Mustang

Solid numbers imho and second only to Toyota..

Taking a long time to get through Toyota's validation process, I was working on one of the components used in the conversion for the Tundra and Toyota made us do all sorts of destructive tests on our product and that was early 2022.

To the point we found out ours was better than the OEM item we're replacing

Which means there will be less recalls than Ford's F-150. I worked with Toyota before and I know how difficult it is.

I find this unreal considering the teething issues that have been going on .Its a shame Ford won’t offer Bronco, Bronco sport and Maverick here, they’d probably finish second to Toyota every month.

The teething issues only hit the official Ford import. There are a few other importers who have been selling F150s long before Ford decided to get in on the action.

"New-car sales have hit the brakes for the second time in three months"

"Our economy grew a modest 0.2 per cent in the June quarter 2024 and 1.5 per cent over the 2023-24 financial year. While this was the eleventh consecutive quarter of GDP growth, it was the sixth consecutive quarter of GDP per capita falls (total GDP divided by the population of Australia). Over the year GDP per capita fell 1.0 per cent."

Recession coming?

Were those importer sales ever captured on Vfacts? I don’t remember seeing F150 numbers before Ford started selling them.

Not counted.
Now that Ford imports them, I'm pretty sure the private importer cannot. Unless they're unique models (like a single cab or a Raptor)

Interestingly they have a bit of a resurgence from Gen Z, couple of the kids at TAFE have highly modified VFs and the like,

There's more car enthusiast apprentice electricians than there were mechanics and auto electricians, maybe its the much higher wages

Two of them have current model Raptors, couple Jap imports as well in the car park.

I would not trust a Gen Z in a SS or XR6T at all. They seem to struggle with the basics of everything as reported in every medium you can think of

Absolutely. I looked at one medium rural dealers stock and they had 19 Raptors in stock. The big boys would have even more. You should be able to buy a new one with a price starting with an 8.
Ford has flooded the market with them and as a result their value is plummeting.
They are still selling at a reasonable rate but there’s just too many.

Really?
I think the whole idea is to have stock on hand for impulse buyers who walk into
dealerships, you’d be surprised how many go on leases so the payments are a
business deduction

And those discounted ones could be a couple registered by dealership with very low kms.
In other words, don’t be surprised if the discount is coming from a reduction in tax paid.

Also, I agree that perhaps that 12 month wait on Raptors is a thing of the past as
there’s so many around and yet Ford continues to have strong Ranger and Everest sales.
Will be intersting to see how things pan out up to Christmas.

Curious to see how new Everest Tremor sells, I’m thinking Ford has done its research right.

The Everest Tremor should sell really well.

A mate just bought a black 24 build new Raptor for $89k D/a. It was in stock and he already had the $$$ sorted. Same dealer had a bunch of them in a variety of colours. The salesman said they had a decent number of people pull out of orders. He thought it may of been because flipping is not a thing anymore. Keep in mind this was what he said when I took him to pick it up so may be utter BS from old mate.

My dealer has decent stock of ranger in general. Bi-turbo they have most models. V6 they have XLT and Sport easily available. Wildtrak V6 isnt too bad either (they have 1 right now unsold) and they have 2 Platinum available. With more coming. That was only a few days ago when I ran into my salesman whilst in for a service...

Probably speaks more to Ford becoming better at supplying them any sort of huge downturn in sales.

Absolutely, it’s a completely different way to pitch Everest and maybe catch Toyota a little off guard.
Could be a way to pick up some nice easy sales until the competition moves to cover - if they can
