Default $40k for my fortieth

I turn the big four-oh in a few months. Aren't I supposed to get myself a Harley or something about now. Then hardly ever ride it. Then fall off it. Then trade it in on a black Jeep Wrangler. Then never take the roof off 'cos it's too windy. Then just give up and get a Camry...

The stable is nice enough at the moment. The Fiesta serves a purpose (battling peak hour twice a day). The Cooper S will get back on the road one day. The missus & ruggies have a Territory AWD Ghia. Maybe I need some more mongrel in there???

The question: The missus says I can have $40k for my 40th. Any suggestions?? Is a mid-life crisis best dealt with via improved personal transport???

Get an American V8 powered muscle or classic.

A mustang, camaro or anything would be great to take the missus and kids out in, a cruise here or there, a drive ill clear up your mind and the stresses of the daily grind as well.

Doesnt have to be quick, but a bonus if it is.

or get a harley.

Agreed, this is not money lost either, old school muscle cars will never go down in value, keep it until you want to retire and then sell or cruise grey ghost style.

Spend $39,000 on yourself and get a really sweet gift for the mrs, then give it to her just before you break the news that her Territory will need to live outside so you can park your new pressie in the garage

How about buy a mustang/cobra for a cruise car for $30,000 and invest the other $10,000 and make it $30,000 by the time your 50.

Given it seems that you must have money to play with I assume that you have already invested enough, if this is the case then spend it all on kick a55 mustang/cobra

Best idea so far but here is another to concider.

Interest rates are going up and the economy will be "inetersting" over the next few years.
Put it in short term for maybe a year or two until interest rates go up enough to affect the real estate market.
Buy a beach side block of land for a pittance from someone who has over committed.
Wait 5 years then sell it to the next burst of "seachangers".
Buy a Phase 3 GTHO for cash.

A friend of mine has made over $1,200,000 (after tax) since 1999 doing just that. (But she drives a Hyundai)
It is most annoying that I actually laughed at her for buying land in such a crap place with 1,000,000 sandfies and stinky mangroves nearby. BIG mistake.

Theres a guy in Lawson NSW selling a BRICKLIN SV1. asking about 19K
You could buy that and spend 20K fixing her up!

Whats a Bricklin?

Only 2500 ever built (in canada), his is only one in australia.

Built in mid 70s using US parts, looks similar to delorean, except in fibreglass.
Has gull wing doors, and 360 AMC v8 (tho lots of them also had 351W)
When they have ford engine, they are recognised by US ford clubs as eligible for Ford Club memberships and Show Days etc.

http://www.aussiemotoring.com/catego...e-and-veteran/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bricklin_SV-1
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/1974-1...cklin-sv11.htm
http://www.x3mcars.com/bricklin/

If you DO buy it, 2 things to note

1- I want a ride in it
2- Dont blame me!

# As part of a series commemorating Historic Land Vehicles, Canada issued the Bricklin Stamp on June 8, 1996. It had a face value of 45¢.
# In June, 2003 the Canadian mint issued a $20 sterling silver Bricklin coin with selective gold plating.
# Both the Bricklin coin and the Bricklin stamp enjoyed greater success than the car itself, selling out quickly.
