i think all t5's are the same luke apart from small differances. EA t5 is apparently slightly weaker, but i can't say it's proven. The EA also has a shorter first gear ratio. It's hard to tell if box is good or not unless you drive it, but makes sure it goes into all the gears etc and put new fluid in it.

Good luck mate, you won't be dissapointed with a manual.

EDIT: EA t5 don't have a reverse break/syncro, but that's no big deal.

As far as I know there's four different boxes.

EA/EB1 - no reverse brake, shorter ratios.
EBII-EL - reverse brake, generally meant to be stronger than the EA boxes.
V8 boxes
GT/Sprint boxes

No difference between Falcon and XR boxes.

XR box = same as non XR.

EA = shorter 1st gear and larger 1-2 ratip drop hence the lower torque handeling

6Cyl
EA 1st = 3.5:1
EB2-EL 1st = 3.25:1
EB SS 1st = 2.95:1

V8
HO = 2.95:1
GT40 = 3.25:1

Yeah but e-series only got 5 or so of them. T5 have been used in so many cars it's not funny. Falcons, Commos, Mustangs, Camaros, pretty much any Ford/GM RWD 5 speed in the 80's.

Ok, nevermind, just read the link and realised it said that. Carry on.

The fifth movie in the Terminator series.

No, really.

It's the 5 speed gearbox that was factory fit to the E-series Falcons.

Also check out the bearing retainer where the throwout bearing runs along, these have a bad tendancy to wear grooves.there are steel ones available.

A few points

Although the specs are the same,I was quoted $200 more for a recon XR box over a recon standard box from Mal Wood, something was mentioned about different bearings but it was a while ago so i cant be sure.

The difference between the 1st and 2nd gear ratios on a EA T5 is what makes them 'weak'. If you shift hard into 2nd on a EA box there is more strain put on the internals compared to later boxes with closer ratios.

The Sprint and GT has roller bearings on the input shaft, the standard box gets needle bearings.
