About 12 months ago I had to put in a new battery into the xr8. When I did the sparky said that the alternator was not charging to its full capacity. ive never had any probs starting the car but just recently I put in a new pioneer head and one of the options is a volt meter. It says its only putting out anywhere between 12.5 to 13.2 volts. It should be around 14.2 volts. I checked it at the battery with my multimeter and sure enough its as the head deck said. My question to everyone is do you think its worth trying just the regulator or just bite the bullet and put a new alternator on. If its the second option I can't seem to find one on the net. What do you think ?

Rang Ford yesterday and was quoted $1092 for an alternator. There must be somewhere else I can get one ? Autobahn need numbers on the alternator to chase one up but I cant get to the car till the weekend. They also seem to believe that it may only be a genuine part. I hope not.

Went to an auto electrical supplyer this morning and was told that they don't list alternators for the v8 AU so he sent me to an auto electrician who did the testing and confirmed mine is faulty. He said he could replace my alternator for $550 (thats getting a little more reasonable). Any way I went back and did another search on google but this time tried "au v8 alternator aftermarket" and found a brand new replacement one for $277. If it turns up I will have saved myself about $800. I got it from a place called G & D International.

Got the alternator yesterday. Put it in the XR last night and its sitting nicely on 14.2 to 14.4 volts now. Bought through the internet for $277 brand new delivered to my door genuine ford part. Beats the hell out of $1092. The internet is a great thing. The mob were called G & D International if you are in need of an alternator.

My car has 103,000 but the alternator was still charging but not as much as it should. Most of the time the voltage across the battery was sitting at 12.5 to 12,9 volts with the revs at just above idle. It should have been about the 14 volt level. I know my cay was doing this from 60,000 K's but it was probably doing it from new. i tried to just get the regulator but you just can't buy them. I'm glad I found an alternator as cheap as I did.

Nice to hear you got alternator sorted BillC!
It seems low kms to be replacing it-but then they can just "go" on you. I have just replaced the alternator on my AU Futura- I've got 255,000kms on the clock. And it cost me $525NZD for a new unit. I could have got a recond unit for $400, but I figured for a hundred bucks I'd rather have a full 12month warranty on a new one than only 3 months on the recond one. |

Happy to see your problem fixed so cheaply.
My alternator went at 85000 km got it replaced under dealer secondhand warranty. Looking at the above quoted ford price glad it died under warranty
