Hey guys,
I'm gonna be getting lsd soon and im just curious as to what's better: getting 2nd hand or going brand new? I'm on a bit of a budget and can't afford too much so i'm thinking 2nd hand would be better so long as it's in good condition...also should i leave the standard 3.45's as i do alot of highway driving. Cheers. |

From my knowledge XR6s all came with LSD? Even my old ED has it.
I'd stick with the 3.45s if you do a lot of highway driving it's a good compromise ratio with pretty good performance and not too bad for economy especially with the tall overdrive of your AU auto. |

Nah man see that's exactly what i thought...until i found out that it was an option with the HP models. Lsd was standard on all of the vct models!

I'm pretty much 200% sure that lsd came standard with HP's..... You sure dude? Where did you get your info from? You could have lsd, just need a rebuild?

Hmm, well according to the brochure they're all supposed to have LSD fitted...
Maybe the PO broke the original and fitted a standard one? http://www.fordforums.com.au/photos/...cat=598&page=1

look for a reco'd 2nd hand one, or one that has been tightened, dont get standard LSD! im on my second one now, first one was weak as, always 1 wheeler in the wet, and now the XR8 one is loose to, needs to be shimmed up i think. or look for XR6t ones

Hey Brent, you just need to do some checking around. Make sure you put fresh diff oil in regardless of what second hand unit you find.

You do realise all an lsd will provide is aid if traction is an issue, alot of people seem to think they offer something else, or maybe I've just never noticed that something else?

be carefull witha second hand one as the k`s pile on they get looser and loser until they are just a single wheeler, mine had almost no lsd action left by the time it had 110000 k`s.

if when you get a 2nd hand unit, simply get it reshimmed while its out. its not that hard, about an hours worth of work (assuming that the centre and crown are already removed).

Bit crazy that the series 1s had it as an option, series 2s supposedly had it standard and then it became an option on the series 3s again!!! |

Good ol ford cost cutting gotta love it. As for the diff I would buy a low kay 2nd hand unit (make sure its a 4 pinion) and take it to a reputable diff shop and get it re shimmed, first off. because the last thing you want is knowing you have an lsd that singles. they last a good time if you take care of them and get them built properly. dont just go for the cheapest workshop arournd, i did and i ended up spending twice as much. Hope that helps |

Hey Brent,
I bought a LSD diff for my AU a couple of months back off ebay for $100 and same ratio as my car 3.45 but i wouldve been better off buying a new item as ive had to replace all bearings and be careful with centre as lsd isnt too tight. Also prices ive come across sydney: wreckers $400+ workshops $500+ hope this helps.

brent this is the guy i bought threw, been reshimmed and stuff, i just have to change the 2 outside bearings which is still roughly $100 so still $450 for a lsd is alright IMO.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/COMMODORE-FOR...3A1%7C294%3A50 if u grab the 3:45s off him aswell he will bolt them on for u and send it all together. |

Hey mate, that interesting that you have a single spinner because I know 5 people that have had AU s1,s2,s3 XR6's and they have all had LSD from factory. Never heard of it being an option but I may be wrong, just never seen one without LSD!
Good luck finding the diff, cheers. |
