I've just been down to Repco to price plugs for my AU3 - they want $22 each for Iridiums, and $63 for a set of 8mm leads. Is this dear, and if so what should I pay and from where?

I'd like to stick with Iridiums, but see platinum plugs recommended a bit. What are the advantages/disadvantages of both?

I've had them in before & they do last a lot longer. I got over 70,000 Kms & they were still ok out of the last set. But the cheaper standed 1's do the job as well.
The Iridium plug can tolerate a lot of heat. I would use them again when the cheap AC Delco plugs need replacing as for performance for every day driving I cannot tell any difference between any decent plug. The NGK site will give you some better tech info www.ngk.com.au |

i have them as i have an egas ute and these are the best plugs for gas as they are a colder plug, i love them

Simple answer BA xr6 T plugs better than NGK $13 each. I have found them to be good (Denso irridiums). Best value the JMM plugs. I havent used them but have spoken to knowledgeable mechanics. They are autoline or autolite 985's. Casper knows what they are. I have the details at work so drop me a PM, I will let you know Thursday. The plug guru is Useless!!

No comment on the plugs, as for the leads, around $60 for a set of Topgun 8mm leads is about right. I dare you to price the 8.8mm leads (I paid $130 - then found them $40 cheaper a week later - I hate that!).

boodek - buy the plugs that are made to fit the car, and which suit your budget. If you just get the standard plugs, be prepared to replace them in 10,000km or so. If you get the iridiums etc, they are supposed to be good for 40,000 plus km. I used to have Bosch Super4s in the wagon (6 cyl), and they worked fine.

Get the denso iridiums.Even though 1 set wasnt good other sets over time have proven to be the best plug.I have not tried Jim Mock plugs but have heard that they are really good as well.

I just put the NGK Iridiums in the EGAS ute ... and my last set lasted me 40,000-odd km ... could have left them in longer ... but started to notice sluggish performance ... so i just replaced them ... much better now in engine response.
Might try the Ford ones next time and see if it's worth it .... if they are only $13 a plug ... then it's worth it I guess. In 6 months (40,000km) time I guess i'll find out ... hee hee

I just had my spark plugs changed at 100,000 k's. The factory ones were still in pretty decent condition, but I changed them anyhow to the NGK Iridiums to see how they went for the trip to FPV weekend.
Compared with the stockies, they sit a bit deeper in the cylinder and hence run a tad hotter. I did notice the engine ran a tad smoother, as for power and fuel economy there wasn't a great deal that I noticed much different.

I've ended up putting Bosch's new Super Plus "Yttrium" plug in the car - total cost about $22.80 from Burson's. This is about the same cost as one Iridium plug which did 80,000km; if these new plugs do 30,000km, I think they will be a far more economical proposition. I'll have to do another 180,000km to spend as much as one new set if Iridiums!

apparently the JMM plugs give a 4 Kiliwatt gain(so they say) so even tho it sounds funny...its a performance mod
