Default distance till empty

distance till empty on your trip meter,,whats the most amount of kms you have travelled when the reading is zero ? how big is a BA sedan fuel take

I've done about 40kms past zero and it took 70.5 litres to fill. That's in the AU.

About 12 to 20 kms after reaching 0km til empty, then filled up and it only took about 62 litres (BF sedan, with a 68 litre tank)

driven for 2 days on 0 about 60km extra, put 68.8L into the TS.

The DTE is not highly accurat and should not be pushed to the limmit it is a giude and should be treated as such

I was down 1 km on the DTE and did a lap around the petrol station too see the result. The experiment yeilded no useful data.....I did put 72L into what i think is a 80L tank (BA ute)

ive had mine down to 0km a few hundred metres before a servo, and have put 61.5litres into my BA

I have had a collegues in a BA run out of fuel on a freeway and was saying it wasn't his fault because the DTE said he had 40 kms to go.......thats a 3 litre inaccuracy within all the calculation the computer has to make....plus there is a frikken fuel gauge which must have been pointing at the 'E' symbol......der

In my Ef Ghia i have had it click on 0 as i was going down to the servo..it started to cough and splatter as i rolled in. So very accurate almost spot on. That the lowest ive ever had it..sometimes run it down to about 5km range.

I often get to 20km to empty and still only fill to 60L. No wonder people who have A to B fleet cars think Falcons use so much fuel! They fill up with 80km to empty which means they only get 400 and a bit out of the car (when they still have ALOT of more km to go) when Holden have a huge 75L tanks and they get 450 - 500 before the chime reminder.

Being overly cautious in my humble opinion. I understand their thinking, but its all about perception in the non car loving world out there.

I've had the EB down to 20km on DTE and it took 65.5litres from a 68 litre tank.

Which is about spot on as I get about 14.5l/100km. Therefor 20km would take 2.87litlres.

I've run outta fuel at 11km and 15km to go in my BA XR8 :( Both times within 50m of the servo I was driving to at the time. Now I get really nervous if it gets down to 20km left and usually fill it at 50km or so.

i got it down to 11 on the way to the spray painter, which was planned.

the last thing i want is apprentice spraypainters having a full tank to play with

got mine to 3km.

I heard the pump starving for liquid, whining away!

a week later I dropped a winding in the pump, and shorted the main fuses 1times out of 3 goes, once running it was fine. Highly not worth rooting around with, 80k's now and I top up.

where do you get the idea your fuel filter would be any worse with full/half or empty tank? it sucks from the bottom of your tank not the top so any crap in your tank *very little* would be going through the filter anyways... ive never understood that theory in a new car.

Absolutely correct - some people don't use the grey matter.

Where does this "crap" come from that people imagine is dwelling in the bottom of their tanks? Fuel is filtered before the fuel pump at the bowser. It is then filtered again between the pump and the hose that you put into your filler.

The only "crap" that can occur in your tank is condensation - vehicles left standing for lengthy periods with little fuel in the tank may suffer from this. It is very unlikely in cars that are used regularly. Anyone who is concerned about it should simply add about 250ml of metho to their tank before driving if the car has been sitting for months on end.

The fuel pickup in the tank has a fine gauze - water won't pass through it let alone any solids. Then there is another filter between the tank and motor. Sometimes even another at the fuel regulator at the rail.

Nah, I can rest easy tonight in the knowledge that my injectors won't get fugged over by "crap".

Not to mention that the fuel in the tank sloshes around and mixes everything up anyway.

At work, I constatly drive cars around with 0km on the range. The longest I've gone was 20km during a road test. Take in consideration these cars are brand new, fresh from the factory too!

I've driven a few KM's after it clicked on 0 in the AU and it still didn't seem near empty, I only put about 62 litres back in the tank afterward from memory.

I think the DTE in all cars should be understimating the actual distance to empty so nobody will run out of fuel well before the car suggests it is empty. I know it's only a rough guide but it'd be good to be assured you can drive at least to 0 before your car runs out, as you can get caught out sometimes.

It doesn't take much "grey matter" to work out what ever gets pumped from one tank to another on several occasions before it gets to your car has the potential for contaminants eg how many times do you see leaky tanks being removed from a servo for repair??? anyway if fuel is as clean as you say, why do manufactures bother with fuel filters and guaze etc. in the first place?
