Question insurance decisions..

Well after my breaking my windscreen I am considering a change in my insurance provider. (long story short they screwed me over)

I have a Ford XR6 Turbo FGX 2015 with no mods, bone stock.

I may be doing a few upgrades in the future, but nothing too crazy.

just after an idea of what people pay for insurance and who they are with.

I am located in western Sydney if anyone else lives in the area would be able to give me an idea of pricing and coverage.

Not in Sydney, but I pay $896 full comp in Vic for the FG XR6T, which includes free windscreen per year, extra car hire above the normal period if stolen, in for repairs, and market value.

Although I'm Rating 1, no accident claims (at fault) in over 40 years and 58 years old, so that makes a difference I guess.

Did you have windscreen cover on your policy, if so how did they screw you?

Western Sydney, FGX XR8 insured for $61k, $1575 p.a. with NRMA. Even though my car is stock, the policy says the value is for all accessories and modifications (except for Nitrous unfortunately)

I know its not a Ford, but for comparison sake:

Southside of Brisbane 2017 Commodore SSV Redline - Agreed Value ($62k) with Windscreen Cover - $109/Month with QBE

My policy covers Modifications and Accessories as long as I Disclose them..

I had to make 2 Claims with QBE on my Mazda (both not at fault if that makes a difference) and they where a pleasure to deal with and got my car sorted very quickly without drama's...

Been with NRMA for about 10 years. They have always been one of the cheapest for me.
I have made two claims where others have damaged my car. Easy as, never had any issues.

If you look at reviews online EVERY insurance company will have bad reviews of screwing people over. It's just what they do. They will never not do it.

I'm with Shannons. At the moment I have $95K of vehicles with them for $150/month. Ford Ranger, XR6 Turbo, XB GT, modified Porsche. That includes windscreen and glass cover, choice of repairer, $500 of tools cover, $1000 trailer cover, 14 days car rental, etc...

Kind of pointless asking what other people pay for insurance, as what you'll be quoted will be dependent on the area you live in (and the stats based on that area), your age, previous accident records and will have little relevance to what other people are paying. The best thing you can do is just shop around with as many insurers as possible and see who will look after you the best with the options you need (windscreen cover, low excess, agreed value etc).

I found found Shannons to be excellent. Covered all my mods no issue.

RACV wouldn't even cover stereo gear worth more than $1000, and the one time I made a claim after one of my cars was stolen they sent an investigator out and interviewed me, and demanded my phone records. Pricks.

I have been with RACV Ins for years and we still have the home/contents and wife's car with them. I have no complaints. Yet in the specific space of 'special' and or cars with 'mods' they have clearly choose to walk away - either providing insufficient cover or a very high premium. That's why the garage queen is with Shannon's

I’m not opposed to insurance companies doing some basic fraud investigation, should keep premiums down if they weed out the fraudsters. However phone records is a bit rich, that’s a job for the police.

It’s funny how insurance companies can vary premiums based on age, gender and suburb (which is a mild form of discrimination) when really, if they want to reduce insurance fraud they should vary premiums based on religion

People often dont tell insurance companies about modifications, and that can bite you in the posterior if you either get denied a payout or get it fixed and performance parts get replaced with stock ones. To be fair my ex wifes g6 when we bought it had 17s off an au fairlane or 75th anniversary fairmont and i put a set of 18s from an era specific xr6 on it and that hasnt been put on the insurance, however they dont know if it was a box ticked on the original sale form and it was a second hand car. To be honest if it got in an accident and came back with the correct g6 wheels id be happy for that. Also a lot has to do with the rate of claims in the area you live in. When i was living at my mums a decade ago, whilst it was an extremely wealthy area, i was paying 1100 for a car that i offloaded for 500. When i payed 20g for a car once i had moved to a reasonably dodgy area full compo was 700. I dont know the real reason, but talking to the folks where my mum lives, they claim every time there is any mark on their cars. And to a degree from what i have seen there is the robin hood effect. Why would you steal average things from an average area when you can do the same in an afluent area and come out better. To a degree once insurance companies assess the genuine risk, they put the extra on if they now people in the area can pay it.

Even though an insurance company accepts your modifications and covers you for them, they also state that the vehicle needs to be in a road worthy condition. So if any of the modifications may have attributed to an accident and they make your vehicle un-roadworthy they have the option to deny your claim.

Yeah but roadworthy is a pretty wide ranging requirement. If a modification is not detrimental to the safety of the vehicle, then it isn,t an issue.Problem is different testers have slightly different opinions on RWC standards. Some will say if it is safe it,s ok!others get pedantic of the smallest item.Technically if the windscreen has a chip its unroadwothy even though it is perfectly safe, likewise even down to no water in the washer bottle is unroadworthy. In fact a few years ago the Victorian Roads inspectors would write out a ticket if a truckie had an empty washer bottle,if they couldn,t find anything else wrong

What I have found with the RACV is basically, if you don't tell them about any mods or accessories fitted, and the car is stolen or written off or the mods are damaged in an accident, they will only pay the agreed value or market value you have insured for less the mods, or pay to repair back to stock.

So they treat the car as being factory stock standard for market valuation purposes.

They don't seem to care about performance mods, so long as they are legal and the car is kept in a roadworthy state.

Under finance?

Brand new cars are always much cheaper for some reason.
Once my ba reached 10 the premiums became astronomical and that's when I switch to 3rd party fire/theft.

Just received the renewal for the fgx, it's 4 years free replacement. $562

I was thinking of that one at one time. Then last week I bumped into a Roo, had I gone ahead with the fire and theft one I'd be up for around $10,000 now

Yeah but mine was worth $2000.

Did they give you $9500 worth of car wash?
And if your bullbar was straight you'd have got away Scott free.

Both, the age of the car and availability & cost of parts for repairs has an effect on premiums. Just because the car is older doesn't mean it's cheaper to fix.

I've found QBE to be the cheapest for me, and I've had to make claims with them before, they're pretty good.
I got a decent market value on my written off car. Had no trouble at all with the windscreen replacement when some derros smashed my windscreen, and repairs when someone merged into me were no problem.

I did an online quote with them and it's heaps more than I actually do pay, so they may not be so cheap anymore.

Having just replaced a windscreen myself, I would be more concerned about the rubbish from china that the auto glass industry all seem to use. Granted, my car is an older model, but I believe the problem is across the board with replacement windscreen's. I am not sure if the FG has a windscreen mold that surrounds the windscreen or not but make sure you can replace it before letting somebody rip the old one out. I am currently considering taking a good original screen and mold out of a wrecking yard, it might be worth you doing the same if Ford don't have stock. Good luck.
