Default The AFF R/C Topic

So guys thought it might be an idea to start an R/C topic. Many of us on the forums probably play with or tinker with R/C cars, boats, planes, helicopters etc. So feel free to list what you have and any video's or pictures you have of your toys. This thread is for anything R/C, not just cars. I will begin I guess.

Over the years I have had many R/C devices. It all began with an old tamiya Datsun my dad had, 20yrs ago. Since then I have owned in no particular order.

Cessna
Helicopter
Air Boat
Sail Boat
Traxxas Stampede
Tamiya XB WRX x 2
Tamiya Gas powered WRX
GV Gas powered XR6 ute

I have sold every single one and am regretting it dearly. I go through stages where I love all my R/C stuuf and then can't be bothered and during those times I have sold them thinking I won't get into it again. How wrong am I, so my fiance has instructions to hide it away if I ever look like I am getting into a can't be bothered mood lol. It also is annoying as I know nobody else with them and have no idea where a good track location or anything is.

Now I have just purchased the Traxxas Slash. It is great right out of the box, mine is the 2WD 2.4ghz version and already I am looking at importing the XL-3 sc and 3500 Brushless motor. My Stampede I was running stock 12t motor and XL-5sc, but I had 2 x 5000mah 8cell hump packs and so obviously my slash is not as quick, so it is a little frustrating lol. Also trying to get a venom charger and 5400mah Lipo. I have found that in just a few quick seconds the body rub is annoying me, so I have used duct tape, trimmed the body and trying spacers. I am not overly confident modding things so I have not tried adjusting the height of the body mounts.

Here is a quick video of before, sorry about quality. My driveway is made up of bitumen with heaps of loose gravely crap. I didn't get my skate ramp out because I am not sure how the rustler would handle it as opposed to my old stampede which loved it lol.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-x_dZlSv4s

And my Stampede with skate ramp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoJnj...eature=related

Mods feel free to move this if you think it belongs somewhere else.

Good thread!
I've only been into cars - never tinkered with anything else at this stage. I raced 1/10 electric cars years ago when I was a kid, in the past 18 months I have upgraded to 1/5 scale petrol - completely different breed of animal!!

Here is the only pic I have on my PC - they are from my phone so not great quality!

Nice cars, may I ask what is with Monster energy? I see shells always in that livery and both of you guys also have Monster shells.

I just finished adjusting the shell mounts to try and create more clearance. I did the back and removed all wheels etc and gave it a good clean. The front I could not figure out how the mount worked. The only 2 holes below the current ones would have meant somehoe squeezing the struts closer to the body, but there was no room to do that. At the very least, I now know how to replace suspension stuff. Are the motors just held in by a single cog? I could not see any engine mounts. As I am looking to upgrade the motor this would be great info.

Forgot to add these to first post

Epic Monster energy!!... I've got a few Limited Edition cans sitting around my room empty too, haha...

I might throw up a few pics of my little thrashbox.... I've gotten it to 74km/h before, and it's only electric too!...

I'll post a few pics of my Traxxas Rustler VXL later.

Definitely get the VXL-3s ESC and 3500kv VXL motor. It's great.

I have two 9 cell nimh batteries that I use in the Rustler VXL. With the right gearing I can get the truck to 90 km/h or so (maybe more, uncertain.) Bought the two packs from Promatch in the US, only cost me about $115 for the packs including post. Post was $15 because they weighed in at 1.2kg.
Looking at getting a 3s lipo soon from SPC. Which should get my truck to those speeds of over 110 km/h XD!

My body is custom - chose monster mostly for the colour scheme, its a slight take on the Ken Block Gymkhana cars.

well I ordered a venom pro charger and venom 2s 5400mah lipo. It is $180 delivered. I saw it o ebay and the guy offered to sell it to me via a paypal invoice and discounted the items. He had 99.8 feedback and ran a hobby shop. Whilst I know hobbyking is way cheaper, I like the venom range and supporting smaller operators.

Next time I am itching for an R/C car I will check tower hobbies. Their price for the Slash to my door was $99 cheaper than I paid, could have had the VXL for the same as my 12T. Ahh well At least I supported local business I guess.

I've been in to planes and still have a heap of them. All foamies, mostly made from Depron sheet, but a couple of pre made foamies. All electric.
A cruisy J3 Cub, a sport plane, and a quick prop-jet type delta wing.
The delta wing's top speed was around 120-130km/h. Unfortunately in one big dive as I was pulling up, the hinges on one aileron let go and tore the plane apart. It's been rebuilt, and upgraded, since. Havent flown it yet though. I need to rebuild the cub, after letting a friend fly it in to a tree, and get familiar with the controls again before I fly the delta again.

I was given an RC buggy as a birthday present this year and after seeing it run a few friends decided to get some too. In a stroke of luck, one of those friends is on a decent block of land. So what do you do with 4-5 guys, some whipper snippers, a lawn mower, some shovels and a supply of bourbon? You make a track of course.
Initially we made a very complicated track, and then were unable to try it out due to weather and other things, so by last weekend the whole thing was grass again. We decided the original design was way too difficult so a new designed was penned and the building began... again. This time we finished it very quickly and had about 1.5hrs before the sun started to disappear. Much fun was had, many dogbones were bent.

We're all only running 1/10 HSP buggies and monster trucks at the moment, but if we keep up interest, I will move up to a slash 4x4. And if I win the lottery I will get a 1/5 Baja Buggy.

Here's a snap of the old track. Somehow in the layout and cut process we ended up with track width's much smaller than we wanted. We aimed for about 2.2m and ended up with abotu 1.6m in some spots. This field started as grass about waist high.

Havent got a photo of the new track, but it's about half the size of the first and much shorter. Next time I'm at the track I'll get a few photos.

I just have a HPI RTR 1/10 scale track/drift car (not running the stock motor from the kit ... setup for drift.

I have hardly had a chance to muck around with it ... have a old school mustang body on it .... it is fun to get into.

Used to drift with some of the guys at work in the carpark on the smooth concrete surface.

My batteries are stuffed though ... so i need to get some more ... I found my charger the other day as well .... which was good to find.

I might get back into it again though ... as it was good fun.

My workmate that got me into it though is a TC junkie ... he loves his helicopters though ... has a few big ones that he mounts a Go-pro to to get video of it ... his biggest chopper is about 2m from cabin to tail rotor. ... pretty much all carbon fibre.

Tested the slash on the skate ramp today. Nothing broken yet lol. One jump I veered off the edge and landed right on the curb with the centre of the car. The grass was lower than the curb creating a lip, and as you would expect, the full weight of the car landed on the curb flat, but it was the chassis that took the impact. Provided it is not raining, this sunday morning the old bmx track (was built in 80's no longer used) is getting a visit. Will be sure to get video. Toying with the idea of strapping my camera to the car.

With the vid of the B4 I never reached top speed.

I race EP on-road:
2010 Stock Tourer 25th in Aus, AE TC6
2010 Stock Tourer 18th in SA, AE TC5
2010 Tamiya Mini 6th in SA, Tamiya M05
2009 Stock Tourer, RRCSA 1st, AE TC5
plus a few more club championship season podiums.

I currently have the following
Team Associated TC6 - Stock Tourer, first raced at the Australian Nationals
Team Associated TC5 - Being setup for VTA
Tamiya M05 - Tamiya Mini
Team Associated B4 - Basher, need to sort out gearing
Team Associated SC10 - Not being used, need a tool to fix

Associated is really annoying since the TC5 their on road cars are Metric but the off-road cars are Imperial.

What did you use for a cemara?

Just wondering which female adapter I need to run turnigy lipo's on a traxxas slash? I can't figure them out from the pics on hobbyking. I can get a venom 7.4v 2s 5400mah with correct plug for $58, but I can buy a Turnigy hardcase 4000mah for about $18. Now are these batteries any good at such a cheap price?

A few very short videos from this morning. It was 6c outside. Very difficult to see the car sometimes, so a few times I was hoping it would come round the corners or over a jump as I would lose sight of it. My bloody son just wouldn't stop chasing it hahahaha.

Batteries..
I run Turinigy 7.4 volt 2s lipos too.
I have 1 hard case one which is 7.4 volts, 5200 mah with 30-40c discharge capacity. Iv had this over 12 months now and its still good.
My other 2 are Soft case Turinigy Nano-Tech 7.4 volt, 2s Lipo with 4500 mah and 25-50c discharge, and these are awesome. Had these 9 odd months now.

Its the discharge C rating you wanna look out for, the higher the number, the more punch the battery pack has. Plus the Nano-Tech ones are half the height and less weight of the hard case ones. All 3 batteries can be charged normally or balance charged.
Iv also converted my charger, batteries and slash over to Deans Connections.

If the car hasn't been change it'll most likely be using Traxxas plugs, non-traxxas batteries usually come as tamiya (horrible POS), deans (what most people use), and bullet.
Most racers tend to use deans which is what I use, and makes it easy if you buy charge and/or batteries 2nd hand.

As for camera, I use this for that price you won't if you smash it!

I had no iterest in rc cars , only after I saw a guy drivin this massive truck around the skatepark and dam it was big , dunno how big but it was about a metre in length and it can flyyy! so next week come , im already in Toyworld lookin for somethin decent to drive , i thought id go in their and just buy a 50 dollar radio cntrl car , but come pay day I walked out not knowing that it was a pro version lol all i wanted was a fast car,

I ended up paying about $600.00 straight out of the box - The Dominator was a brushless (dont even know what that means) motor and battery powered , and this thing was FAST!! 1/10 scale but for a big rc it took off , the guy at the store reckoned itd do 80 kays , and im pretty sure hes right . so 1st night i got it , took it out of package and straight onto the tar , 5 mins after whippin/burning rubber and skids slammed it straight into the gutter bent the whole front end :( was a very short night lol

they are the best off road truggys youll ever drive , havent had so much fun with these since im not the most exp driver out there , good bfyb though

Well my R/C days are over for a few weeks lol

I was in a carpark this morning after chnging pinion and spur gear to get more speed, as it went past me I turned to make sure it was still on track, I slipped and let go of the steering for a second and it was enough time to slam straight into a curb so now I have to order some new parts (will probably go alloy) and wait. I will get them sent to Perth as my op is in 3 weeks and I have to stay in Perth for at least a week after the procedure, so I will use the spare time to install my Velineon system and fix and strengthen.

this is what I was doing before

Dont go alloy on the front upright/hub, they have no flex or give in them, and if you stuff either the bearings in the hubs, they can sometimes fuse to the alloy housing and are a mongrel to get out.

Theres a good bloke here in Bris who brings in Slashes and pulles em down and sells the bits off em on ebay. It is cheaper buying stuff off him in most cases than getting it from overseas.
Heres his store.. http://stores.ebay.com.au/REVO-LUTIO...id=p4340.l2563

Funny you say don't go alloy. I basically ordered an integy front end, after some reading and your post, I canceled said order and ordered RPM suspension arms, steering blocks and castor blocks, so no alloy front end. I also ordered alloy shock caps as I have some slash 4x4 shocks coming and read the alloy caps are a little better for strength when jumping. Finally ordered some 32p Spurs and various pinions. So I will be busy during my time off. Will be a slow process changing parts as I am a noob at modifying and will do it slowly so I don't make mistakes.
