Default New family daily

We currently use a MY10 2011 SR5. As it nears 300kms and requires some maintenance work i think the time to upgrade nears. The hilux has been great as we have dogs, 2 kids, tow a van every now and then and head offroad every now i.e. sandhills, beach. I think better the devil you know. Seeking opinions or thoughts for alternatives.

Business or private purchase ?
Does it have to be a dual cab ?
Can Everest V6 for eg be considered depending size of dogs in the back ?
Budget or not to be revealed.

Haha copy on the budget. Looking at 2nd hand late model hilux/ranger prices high 50k low 60k.

Private. We use a Hilux because we have/had 2 med-large dogs (RIP Leo) and we'll get more. Still have a kelpie/heeler which sheds hair, so dogs inside a car arent ideal.

What a world we live in when $60K these days only buys a second hand Thailand Special

You might be able to scrape into a new povvo spec Ranger dual cab at mid 50s, I'm not sure I'd be keen to spend $50K-$60K on someone else's problems.

Even the povvo spec is going to be better equipped than ye olde KUN26R SR5 Hilux

Check out build and price on Ford's website, an XLS with the twin turbo is $60K DA with 4x4.

There's heaps of either brand as you may have looked.
Compared to others here I don't have brand loyalty anymore since Falcon gone.
Both have their good and bad points, its just finding the one that ticks your box's the way I look at it nowadays.
Value, low k's, type of use and how looked after, winner either way.

what Franco said is moot though due to budget.
Who wants a povvo clean skin pack with no accessories.
Add on over 5k or abouts for good product so the povvo will be over 60k and everything base inside another turn off.
IF it was a full on work vehicle yer I get it, for hols with the wife etc I'd sooner a low k full of fruit.

The OP just delivered where I went to in my searchs, in budget but r b m, your links have higher k's than I'd be happy with.
Lower the better for me.

Agreed with everything youve stated, except im happy with <50km. Yup, POV packs dont cut the mustard for family use and the niceties add when comparing even with older gen premium packages, especially on long trips where youre wiping food off of leather/vinyl vs cloth, having decent ICC connectivity, better ride and less road noise.

The thing is you don't know about how well all those accessories were fitted and if they've been in for the recall for the injectors on the Ranger or condition of the DPF on both vehicles.

I'd be suspicious of a car with low kilometers for it's age, it could mean it's done a lot of suburban driving or short trips which is anathema for the DPF.

You've got absolutely no warranty on the accessory fitment, or the DPF, the latter is a four figure filter that starts with a 3, 4, 5 or a 6 and on the Hilux it's known to be an issue - then you're in the hands of our ****weak consumer law, where you're the second owner attempting to fight a private company who has no buy-in from you who are going to pull out all the stops to prevent you getting a four figure filter out of them.

Personally I think you're better off with a new povvo spec Ranger and then pay the extra for the accessories you want, optioned up by the dealership, that way you've got the manufacturer warranty of a new vehicle rather than rolling the dice with circa $60,000.

It's one thing rolling the dice on $5000-$10,000 ****boxes, it's another scoring a $60,000 ****box.

If you're worried about missing out on the ICC, the povvo spec Ranger has a massive ICC, go test drive one before you make a decision. We're also talking about the newest Thailand Special on the block here so it won't be as bad as what you think even though she's povvo spec.

A 2023 base Model will be a Big step up from a 2011 SR Lux in every way..!!

Just get some decent Seat covers, Which I'd have regardless of what Spec I buy..

Do you really need the bull bars and roof racks ect? Those things are extremely heavy and blow the fuel economy out the window.

We have a current gen Hilux dual cab SR with steel bull bar, tray, sliders and roof racks. The fuel consumption is abysmal, even a big 4.0 Falcon would use less.

Comment from a current Ford employee on this forum was asking about add ons like these two not helping at all.

yer but the add ons are just part of lifestyle life today what people want.
Nothing wrong with that.
Depending the the person and type of use re business requirements or pleasure vehicle.
Private user should get alloy front bar full stop period (around 60/70kilo)
Steel bars add 100kilos, then winch lights for eg.
You need to review and be wise and smart type of the products on offer or fited.
What the OE employee should be saying but he won't is the OE standards are light weight full stop period for starters due to all the regs applied today and might I add they the OE's like to reduce costs more than anything else therefore as we know the cars of today are a pale in longevity once was.
The other point is being these thais etc are very popular to the average consumer they don't want to make the OE suspension to firm in the first place for that customer reaction - oh the ride isn't that bad for lets remember back in the day they all had leaf leaf and 90% of them went to farmers and other heavy use industries.
Ofcourse they are going to die in power with the added weight, no diff to anything else that wasn't designed for but back in the day we had inline 6 or 8's.

Franco your summary of buying a pov compared to a pre owned not high k fully optioned don't stack up sorry most times.
OK you can get sucked in and buy a trouble lemon one but you just didn't do the homework.
I have bought alot of low k pre owned its all about the shopping and info accumilated.
One owner, service history, in WTY, extended WTY, factory options or not, what they added, brands, etcetc most good honest owners keep their receipts for everything they do.
Bull bars easy to check the brand etcetc no hard basket.
Can get a pre check if your not with much knowledge.
Bought plenty low k pre owned from 4x4 to sedans/wagons incl performance ones.
Not one dud and saved a motza.
Mind you I have bought new as well.

Roof racks would depend on where Mr Monkey wants to go, but can be taken off when not in use.

Bullbar? where lives that would mandatory, and a good one not one of those plastic ones that look stylish but do nothing with a good hit.

You start by saying options depend on intended use,then you say a bullbar is a must.What value is a bullbar if you use the car around town in daylight.I can’t see the difference between a Ute and a regular sedan as far as a bullbar goes.Then why buy a specced up version when the basic does exactly the same job,but for a lot less money.Makers like those who go upmarket because it costs them $10k to sell for an extra $20k,why wouldn’t they try to talk you into upmarket ?

Because most people like to have more of the interior mod cons tassie.
The OP stated he likes better interior etc for their trips etcetc
Yep the pov does the same a to b but the op prefers up spec.

Just a point to consider is with a budget of 50-60k if you go for a new one or a used dealer second hand you will get stung 10% GST on top so $55k will be you actual max budget.

I always go private as it's not hard to use you head to get a good one and there's no GST on private sales. Meaning you can go the full $60k which should get a excellent private used model and you're always able to negotiate further eg, 2021 Wildtrak and only 26000klms,

He hasn't even driven one yet, the povvo pack KUN26R Hilux was designed 20 years ago, and the new Ranger just hit the market, it's not even an apples and oranges comparison comparing a 20 year old povvo spec Hilux design to the new povvo spec Ranger that just hit the market.

I'd hazard guess that the brand spanker povvo spec Ranger is going to ride nicer, the stereo be better and have way less NVH issues than his KUN26R SR5.

It's like comparison between the Mazda B series based 'Ranger' and the PX Ranger, they're generations apart from each other, one was based on my Mazda B2600 and the other was a clean sheet design, and let me tell you a povvo spec PX Ranger is like driving a 7 series compared to my B2600

If it's a case of making appearances and 'keeping up with the Joneses' then fair enough it is what it is, as the qualified automotive tradesman in this thread with experience with the tears that come when you have the DPF replacement conversation with the customer it's a decent roll of the dice, or having to redo someone's dodgy dual battery setup and they jump up and down about it.

Don't write it off just yet, give it a drive first that's all I'm saying.

Anything worrying you about your Hilux? How much maintenance is needed? What 'new' stuff in a new ute would serve you better than what you have? Safety/economy/power/features?

I went through this about a year ago. My 2014 Ranger is clocking up the KM but has the mods I need and suits my work/life. At the time it had around 250,000km on the clock. Did some costings and it worked out I would of been out of pocket $40-50k to get a <3yr old ute to where mine is now. But then I would of had a 2020/21 ute that would of had very similar safety/space/features etc but just newer and less km.

I decided to keep my ute, have spent over $5k on preventative maintenance (new injectors/glow plugs, inlet manifold clean, trans flushed, new radiator/fan and a few other bits and pieces. Hopefully get me a few more years until my needs change. Now at 273,000km and happy with my decision.

Just couldn't justify the $$$ and the covid prices.

But honestly, we live regionally. Port Lincoln is <700kms west of Adelaide, we drive along highways where the risk of cleaning up rabbits, foxes or roos happens 10mins from home, plus we drive dirt roads a lot in summer at national parks or visiting beaches. The current hilux's 2nd front bar without a bullbar is looking a little worse for wear, and as a family with dogs who travel racks/cage/bullbar are a near necessity. You havent seen my wife pack for a weekend for herself and 2 kids, so capacity to carry luggage anywhere outside the cabin is also ideal.

Although fuel consumption is definitley a consideration, for 75% of the time the wifes car is travelling in town. I also drive an F6x, so to me good fuel consumption is anything 15lt and under

Good thoughts, and i have considered the same. The current hilux has cloth interior, ICC with temprimental BT and no other features, no bullbar, no extra lighting i.e. light bar, will be due for tyres, brakes and service soon, tailgate latch needs a new cable, no hardlid or canopy (we sold the canopy a few years back). When travelling a hard lid is handy for luggage for protection, light bar/spot lights and bullbar for highway travels, cage and racks for our paddleboards, fishing rods, luggage. Remember, were not city folk who navigate small car parks and rummage through shopping malls weekly.

These are the things i think we need, so to spend that money on a 300km ute, its a little hard to justify. On top of like a little extra comfort and safety for my wife and longer travels inc. 'flashing lights' (improved BT and stereo, reverse camera etc), and i think she deserves an upgrade after having 2 kids.

Thats the justification i guess. But i see your point and its very valid, and in fact, if this was just a runaround car i wouldnt bother with an upgrade, but this is the wife and kids car.

Compaisons are good and they serve a purpose. I agree in principle with what youre saying but for example, i purchased an F6 Tornado over FG xr6t, i bought an F6x over the SZ. Newer cars of the same budget dont always offer value, particularly in package and resale value, especially when your talking the difference of one generation. Is the PXIII a bucket of bolts, a horse and cart, compared with the latest iteration? I doubt it.

very well said and agree, especially that after all your time the wife deserves "more" haha done the same for mine sometime ago.
Yep nothing wrong getting a good PX111 with the fruit, saves you a motza.
Hilux the same, I saw news last night on the DPF suit that has been going on since 21 from memory, it effected sometrhing like 250k Hilux/Prado/Fortuner.
Toy has been open finally dealing with customers etcetc - bummer yes but out of how many are out there not too hard to see by the seller if it was one effected and corrected or having someone watch it drive off spotting the white cloud
Either ither with the fruit that suits will serve your purpose, as mentioned IF a alloy front bar is suitable for your need at least some weight reduction will help economy wise.
Bucket loads out there.

Is Triton of interest? It comes with a long warranty.

Seems like second hand Hilux 4x4 can be purchased with low 100,000 km range in the mid $40's.
