Agree, I think 3D printing will bring back at least some manufacturing back to Australia, which would be great

I think the real takeoff in 3D printing is going to be coupling it to a good quality 3D scanner. I mean you can already get a 3D printer for under a grand, metal printing ones for a lot more but they're getting cheaper.
The one drawback is they can only print stuff someone somewhere has scanned and uploaded for you to download the pattern. Not much help for the small plastic interior bits that people envisioned using them for in the classic car mobs, because what guarantee do you have that someone has uploaded the particular part you need? However, if they have a scanner you can get cheaply at home, you can take your broken bit and scan it in, then print it yourself. That will be a real revolution. |
