The BMW 3 Series is the carsales Car of the Year for 2019.
But not one of the judges who arrived to decide the 2019 carsales Car of the Year presented by Shell V-Power expected the BMW 3 Series to win at the outset. Sure, all 12 judges rated the BMW 330i sedan highly, with the potential for a podium place, but nobody expected it to romp home by a clear margin at the head of the 28-car field of finalists. https://www.carsales.com.au/editoria...e-year-121520/

COTY gongs should always be accepted with a degree of reservation… The JB Camira received Wheels’ anointing in ‘82.

Been in a few of them and "sheer driving pleasure" rings true. A welcome return and job well done by Bimmer. Took their eye off the ball and Audi more so than MB relegated the 3Series for sometime but their last few model upgrades you could see it coming back to the front. Love 3series from way back having a E21 - I'll be back in a bimmer in the future.

I was stirring when dragging up the Camira.
Simply not a fan of BMWs, moreso after that horrible 330Ci car-sitting experience earlier this year - it was expiring from a combination of age and aspirational purchase (cf chronic neglect). |

Don’t really hear much bad about BMW like you do about Mercedes.
I’d go a 2019 340i wagon if it ever came to Australia. The wagon looks great. |

Maybe they got a big advertising cheque, that’s how these things are normally sorted, anyone thinking these awards aren’t influenced by financial lubrication is kidding themselves.

You can't retrospectively look at awards years later and ask how did such a pile of crap win COTY - remember when it won the award they were all fresh off the showroom floor, it takes years for problems to start occuring unless you get a lemon.

Nah, the problems start as soon as BMer's leave the show room, possibly the worst depreciation of any vehicle. Also my neighbours brand new 430 has had numerous visits back to the dealer, POS.

It survived my driving on P-plates. The key to keeping them running good is thrashing the hell out of them. They go to crap when you baby them. Trust me ... I know from experience.

The JE was ok with the 2.0i, in-laws had one when I met them and it just kept going, learned to drive in it.

Every new car depreciates the moment you drive it off the dealership floor and your singular example of your neighbors experience is the exception, not the rule.

Normally I'd agree, but one of the criteria was resale value, they said the BMW performed well in this aspect.

I do question Wheels choosing the XC40 for 2019 going back to back for Volvo.
surely if they are a great car they would sell well, can anybody tell us how many XC40's sell per month?

Seriously cheap - obviously you don't like bimmers ? but no matter, I don't know which branded euro holds great re sale for they all lose a bomb faster than burning the fuel. Family has had Bimmers/MB's/audi's over many years, some have been trouble free some have been utter rubbish - what brand doesn't have its good and bad builds. One prestige brand that probably comes out better than them all is the Lexus, if it was a euro brand I expect they would be No1 - for they seem to hang together better and the depreciation is not as a monstrous hit than those above. Old man got one after getting sick and tired of the euros, can't fault it for an expensive white goods lol.....

Real world, 2nd hand BMers sink in value. Once they are out of factory warranty they plummet. Carsales couldn’t care less much. Ownership ends in tears with the rock bottom trade in valuations.

Give it another 15 years as the popularity increases further, local auto tradies will know how to correctly diagnose and repair faults and parts will come down in price. Welch Autoparts, Imparts and HSY Autoparts are Euro aftermarket parts specialists - Repco/Burson need not apply. I'm no Euro fanboy, though I did own an E38 735iL affectionately nicknamed 'Adolf' - it crapped out it's timing chain guides at 130,000km. |

But I think that's changing particularly in these smaller sedans. even today's Camry has enough tech to be expensive once out of warranty.
