Am I somewhat simplistic in wondering why there is no discounting of diesel fuel. From my limited understanding of diesel, it would appear that it is the less refined cousin of petrol, costing less to make and being taxed more and never appears to be discounted. Because we bought diesels to save on fuel by buying less of it,So the fuel companies keep the price high and get us that way.

Matilda now owned by Neumann and United in QLD do discount diesel-7c cheaper than the majors.
Too good to miss run it in my TDCi ($1.435 yesterday). |

I am hesitant to buy "no name" fuel. It may be alright but the instances of people having to do rebuilds or replace injectors and pumps are well documented. It is not always the suppliers, however, as some of the operators are less than diligent when it comes to fuel quality.

I have the same question.
Although, I do kind of like how the price pretty much just stays the same. No crying because I have missed the Cheep day. Then using various discounts I get about 15c/l off that. |

The thing that gets me is that the oil companies whinge and carry on about price fluctuations of crude oil and the ups and downs of the prices but the mongrels wont discount the price of diesel. They are so quick to put the price up and so slow to bring it down again when it drops

I have a 20 cpl off discount for woolies ready to go .I will fill the car (diesel)and boat (petrol) + jerry cans when the price of petrol drops in the cycle to make the most of it.

I like that diesel doesn't have a discounting cycle, so I don't care what days I buy my fuel.
Just use my 15c/l discount vouchers. Alway use Caltex Vortex Diesel, none of that cheap independent fuel for me. |

Diesel is a by product of crude, it is a oil not a hydrocarbon as such like gasoline (petrol) is. It runs through a totally different process at refineries to clean and remove sulphur from LCO (light crude oil), and refined again another process comes kero, and again refined you get jet fuel (not av gas).

so how I read that is that it is cheaper to make than petrol as it has less processes and is less refined so in theory (if our greedy government didn't get into the act with taxes) it should be cheaper. Am I missing anything here? Is this simplistic?

I'm the same with the diesel, ya don't get much movement with price it tends to only move within a 5 cent bracket. Be even better now that my beloved XR6 is being with a titanium wagon in a couple of weeks.

Here in Brisbane diesel will almost always sit between 147.9 and 152.9 cents per litre, if you get a 15cent per litre discount it's just as cheap at petrol mostly :-)
Remember the old days when petrol used to be 25-30 cents dearer than diesel???
