Smile British brand claims Aussie buyers ripped off, so it cuts more than $100,000 of its 1

Formula one team-turned-sports car maker McLaren has slashed the prices on its two models and says it has done so because its rivals over charge in Australia.

McLaren Automotive issued a statement this morning claiming that the supercar market in Australia has been “historically overpriced.” The same statement went on to claim “a number of the ‘core’ manufacturers employ premium-pricing policies in this market.”

This is not the first time supercar makers have been accused of charging Australian customers more than overseas buyers.

In 2011 Lamborghini was criticised over the price of the Aventador model. At the time the company said it would review the price, yet since then the price has been increased by $6900.

McLaren has cut the price of the 12C coupe by $95,000, down from $493,100 to $398,000, while the 12C Spider has been reduced from $543,900 to $441,780, a saving of $102,120.

McLaren has sold only seven cars in 2013, according to the latest VFacts figures. By comparison, arch-rival Ferrari has sold 34 and Lamborghini 20 cars up until the end of April (although both Italian brands offer more than two models).

McLaren is the latest prestige brand to cut its prices. Last month Porsche slashed its range by up to $36,000 on some models.

And late last year Rolls-Royce cut up to $280,000 from some its models in Australia, claiming it was a result of the strong Australian dollar.

As for customers who’ve just bought a new McLaren, the company says it will give them a “special allowance” when they trade in their car - but only if they are upgrading to another new McLaren.

Drive has contacted McLaren for more information but has yet to receive a response.

Now for AUDI, BMW and Benz etc to follow.....not holding my breath!!!!!

Those of you with the odd $400K burning a hole in your pocket - you'd better get in quick!

There's been a 2% drop in the value of the AUD in the past 36 hours and it is unlikely that these ridiculously low low low prices will last much longer.

Of course those cynics out there might be of the opinion that these types of cars are overpriced to begin with and McLaren is really desperate to move idle stock.

Keep in mind they are seen as prestige cars, hence the price...imagine if the price was lowered and you'd have brickies cruising around in X5's or AMG's instead of commy utes lol

And what would be wrong with that? Are you saying that those of us that are members of the fine brotherhood of bricklayers aren't good enough for an M sport or amg vehicle? The reality of it is a decent bricklayer is probably quite capable of buying one, we're just not big enough posers to do it.

Porsche has been getting battered about for many years over the simply staggering price differential between overseas and Australia. Some of the price can be attributed to our unique "RHD only in new cars" laws and a few other small ADR points, but after a stage it becomes a case of stepping back and saying "Oh come on...how gullible do you think we are..."
Go to the USA or Europe, and a Caymen is almost seen as a "poor mans Porsche" because of the price point. (around $60,000 in the USA, but over a hundred grand starting off in Australia...)

At those prices if you can afford a car like that you've got enough cash to not have to worry about $100k.

It is good to see though, when it comes to anything non Holden/Ford Aus/Toyota/Nissan/Mitsubishi/and a few others we get raped price wise here in Aus.

I'd love to see Merc, BMW and Audi drop their prices, though that'd kill Falcon and Commodore sales.

I don't think anyone is rich enough to not worry about saving a hundred grand on a purchase...you wouldn't stay "rich" for long if you didn't...

Except any Saudi Oil tycoons, Gina Rinehart, Bill Gates, etc. They've only sold 7 McLarens so far this year so obviously only the super rich are buying and there comes a point where 100k is nothing when your business deals in millions a day.

You would be surprised......

For some of the richest $100k would be a weeks (probably less) intrest.....
