Default here is the poll... i hope

about to do an oil change on the mazda...
just wondering what synthetic oil to use, and what people on here use...
only put royal purple onhere to see if people use it...
couldnt be bothered looking for prices, im assuming theyre all around 70 to 100... for 5 litres... royal purple is a bit more ive heard...
they will just be the brand, if you like specify type...
btw, i can get caltex fully synthetic 5w40 from work... for about 0...

I've used most in my AU and found there to be big differences.

In my own opinion (which will no doubt differ from others)
Caltex - very good but shot after about 4000kms.. if its free you can do a LOT worse.
Castrol - will never put it in my car again. Once was enough, drained it after 1000kms and it was like water.
Shell - Great oil, probably my 2nd choice and "default" buy for value for money.
Royal Purple - Never used it.. no idea.
Fuchs - very good but not avaliable everywhere
Mobil - Expensive but my first choice in oil.. exceptional!

I would have to say MOBILE. I can get mobile thru work quite cheap. but It really is a good oil, lasts the full 5000kms for servicing. Oil like fuel you can't skimp on.... what crap oil can do to an engine in 5000kms is amazing. I have seen it first hand.

I've used both Motul and Castrol Edge 10W-60 full synthetic. Both rock. Mind you not in the XF. This is in an R34 GTR. The XF gets Penrite 20W-50

Mobil. Quality commands a price. It's expensive for a reason.

Nulon. Done a few thousand on it so far, no weird noises on start up (Windsor engine) and for a full synthetic for less than $40 I'm pretty happy with it.

penrite and nulon are very good oils but the best by far is fuchs.the company i use to work for was the second largest distributor of castrol in qld and i can tell you that even their reps don't use castrol in their personal cars.we sold both fuchs and conoco [mineral based] and both oils are exceptional and inexpensive.check out autoweb 'horsepower in a bottle'. mick webb tested fuchs against the "top 3" synthetic oils[mobile, castrol and shell] in a 351 clevo and the numbers are pretty amazing. cheers.
