Default Mk 2 escort

Hey guys,
Been a memeber on the forum for a while as a falcon owner.
But recently purchased a Mk2 escort GL, its an auto 1600,
It resonable condition but has had an accident with a smashed up drivers door and guard. but apart from that pretty good.
always loved the escorts and looking forward to getting stuck into this one.

Anyway Ive started doing some research into freshening up the motor and get a bit more power happening. Also lookign at doing a manual conversion.
Ive found a 4spd from a mk1, I belive this will bolt straight up, can anyone confirm for me?
Also anyone got any advice on engine upgrades,
Im thinkin carby?
and manifold to suit.
then extractors/exhaust,
and a upgraded cam of some sort?

Anyone got any thoughts or advice, not looking for anything amazing but just get her running nicely.

cheers Henry

Hi Henry

The best performance upgrade for an Escort is to go for a 2 litre. However, if you are goin g to stick with the 1600, a couple of easy and cheap mods aer an air filter and extractors. not sure what cams are about for the 1600, but a Kent fast road cam would work nicely. However, if you are going to the expense of cams and carbies, you are better spending the cash on a 2 litre.

Have fun...they are an awesome car.

agreed. Best start is definately with a 2 litre, especially if you're going to the efoort of changing the auto for a manual. Theres a few 2 litre pinto motors on ebay at the moment and they always seem to come up

I agree with RSgerry I just pulled the 1600 out of my Capri and put in a 2 litre with a 5 speed behind it unbelievable difference, the 1600 was sick but it now flies worth the change.

Henry,
I'm in SA, Whyalla but I do have 8 x 2L motors and 4 speed gearboxes, if you have no luck over your way we could always work something out. a 2 L cortina engine and gearbox will go in minus exhaust manifold (gets in the way of the steering column) just put extractors on.
Cheers,
Les

if its a cortina motor YOU WILL need an escort sump & oil pickup -cortina pick up is at the front, escort is at the back
the front radiator support will need to be modified as well (real easy), then wiring loom modified to suit as well

If you do fit the old ford 2 litre and not a nissan as so many do then replace the valve gear oil feed tube , they crack often

I had a 1600 auto and bough a wrecked 2L manual for $500 if you have the room this makes it a really easy swap as you can see how everything fits together as you take it out and there is no need to buy all the little bits such as the clutch cable and pedal box that you don't really think about when looking for the engine and gearbox. on mine i had some problems with the gearbox cross memeber but this can be easily fixed with some blocks between the crossmember and the floor. or a homemade crossmember if you are know someone good with metal. also keep the old tailshaft off the 1600 as it is way better.
