Putting the gun issue aside as I really CBF with that argument, my thoughts and condolences go to all the familys that have been dealt the most heart breaking low so close to Xmas, I cannot understand how a person could possibly intend to inflict so much pain onto so many people.

So sad, thoughts with the families of those lost, and the poor people and children caught up in it. Not only were lives lost, but many children lost their innocence today, and will need a lot of help to get through this. I hope they get as much support as possible.
People can say all they want about how this could have been prevented, but it wasn't. Time needs to be taken to mourn the children and people lost, then we can consider how to stop this ever happening again. From the sounds of it, the shooter may have had medical issues (purely speculative however), and I hope this is considered as well as any talks over gun control.

...20 small children aged between 5 and 10 mercilessly shot dead There aren't words
What is wrong with America? How many innocent people have to die before they change their ridiculous gun laws? They just don't get it.

I got nothing, cannot understand what goes on inside the head of someone that does this.
May the innocent people rest in peace.

What US law permits someone to carry a gun into a school and shoot children? If there is one, then yes, it needs to change. I hope they don't change the one that permits me to carry a gun for shooting clays, hunting, and self-protection.

I wish I could say I was surprised but I'm not. Does not make it any less dreadful and especially around this time of year.

Maybe it's the lack of a proper health system. People with mental illnesses struggle to find the help they need.

This is a terrible tragedy and there is very little accurate information yet.
If this thread turns into a political cat fight it will be closed and deleted. RIP those who passed and my condolences to all other involved. |

Very sad, but if someone wants to kill a bunch of people, then they're going to find a way unfortunately.
Just a shame people cannot seem to see there is a difference between "law abiding normal gun owner who follows all the rules", and "criminal misuse of firearms by people who have no intention of following any laws"...they lump us all in together... Last edited by 2011G6E; 15-12-2012 at 12:19 PM. |

Its an absolute tragedy.
It is terrible the amount of people who go and do mindless violent things around this time of year because they are depressed due to something bad that has happened one Christmas in their past. Shame that when they are acting on their inner demons they are destroying any future Christmas for any number of people and the cycle goes on. The whole gun control argument is something that will never be resolved. People who want guns for illegal activites will still get them easily. The law abiding gun owners who have no desire to kill people get controlled but the fruit loops dont. If anything excessive gun control makes the blackmarket even more lucritive and profitable creating more crime to meet demand. In Sydney if you have the cash it is no harder to buy an illegal weapon then it is to buy drugs. Also human nature is insane to say the least. I could be sitting 20m from a bus stop with half a dozen people sitting at it carrying an UNLOADED shotgun and everyone would run and hide convinced I was going to kill them all. But if I was in a truck 20m from a bustop with it lined up people wouldnt think twice about the situation. Dont worry about the fact that I can still easily kill the same 6 people in less time by mowing through the bus stop in the truck. The sorry fact is weapons dont kill people , people do and ANY everyday item can be turned into a weapon by a person that is that way inclined. Terrible situation anyway. |

I will clarify the above.
DO NOT TRY TO TURN THIS INTO ANOTHER GUN CONTROL FLAME WAR. This is a tragedy about which we know very little. Those who wish to use the misfortune of others to push their own agenda are on thin ice. |

I gave my boys an extra hug before bed time.
RIP to those that died and I can't even begin to imagine how the parents who lost a child in this way will cope. Last edited by flappist; 16-12-2012 at 12:04 AM. Reason: no politics |

This is a truly horrific thing to happen and is terribly sad.
I would ask that people carefully consider their responses though. Whilst referring to the guy as a whack job and hoping that he suffers forever in hell is completely understandable, I think that it is obvious that he was mentally unwell. Rather than hateful castigation after the fact (the easy route), perhaps the key to stopping these sorts of things from happening is to destigmatise mental health and have a more open and constructive discussion about how best we can support people with these issues.

Rest in peace little ones, terrible tragedy. I cannot begin to think what it must feel like to be a parent of a little one lost. God help them.

Once again a thread is hijacked.
Which particular part of "no politics" was unclear? |
