Question Survey of AFF members Body-Mass-Index

From the AFF Weight Gain/Loss Program thread I thought maybe it would be good to see how fat are we. It is often stated in media that Australia is one of the fatest nations on earth. So how fat are we AFF members? Here is a BMI survey. Please note BMI is not a perfect measure as it does not take into consideration percentage of body fat. Example, a former work colleague who pumps weights has a BMI which puts him in the overweight category. But if you saw this person you would see that he is not fat.

To calculate BMI see linked article:

I'll admit it, I'm fat: 5'8"/1.73m and 19st/120kg. Solid frame, but disgusted with myself atm.

2006: I was 12.5st/80kg. Felt like a king. Just got real lazy after a bad motorcycle accident. There's only one person who can fix that though - no good in making excuses, the blame rests solely with me.

Cheers!

Wow, I know I've put on a few kg's over the last couple of years (desk job) but I'm right at the edge of a BMI of 30. I'm 1.85 and hovering around 100kg.

I'd like to get back to around 80kg. That would have me at the high end of healthy
Most people I've told about the weight I wish to get to think I will be too skinny.

Yep, overweight & undertall. BMI off the scale.
Was 73 kgs a few years back, the result of dieting & exercise, and felt good.
But according to the BMI thingo, I was still overweight......
Fixed problem by eating whatever I like & not worried about weight anymore.

my bmi puts me as obese - while i am overweight (damn you injury & menopause) i'm not obese.
the bmi has been roundly discredited in recent years, waist measurement is generally a better option

24.5

I'm happy with my weight, I'm not on any medication and my blood pressure is fine (checked when I donate blood each quarter). I also turn 50 later this year.

But, my fitness is poor as is my muscle tone.

Too much time on AFF perhaps

Bmi is a crock. I'm 195 and 115 and it tells me I'm obese. Don't think so! Also no allowance for muscle and the body shape. No way in hell I'd be able to get to 85kg which is what I'm 'Ment' to be

I got 21.3.

I'm 6'4 and 81kg, I'm trying to put on a heap of weight so I'm surprised I fell in the middle of normal weight section. I'm too slim. I have a fit physique I spose, I just find it hard to keep any fat, it burns off way too easily.
I'm getting there though, I was 68 odd kg and maybe an inch shorter when I was 18, now 20.

Well, I was a bit ashamed of my readings but here goes;

183cm / 6' tall

126kg / ~275lb

I'm a few weeks off moving into a Seniors Village.

Physician says I should weigh 67kg / 147lb, bloody hell,, my fighting weight was 87kg / 191lb back in the day.

Cheers Vincenzo

Ok, I know it's a yank thing, but should apply to us too?
You'll need to convert your weight to pounds because it's yankee. (Kgs x 2.2 gives your weight in pounds)

Yep apparently I'm obese. I am fat (still have about 10kg to lose) but I'm not obese (anymore)! BMI is really a crock like mentioned.

187cm and 115kg - and I train so some of that is actually muscle, not just my wishful thinking.

Interesting calculator, it tries to account for driving behaviour as well. I wonder how well it applies to us considering there's a significant difference between US and Aus life expectancies? I haven't looked up the figures lately but they sit near the bottom of the stack for wealthy countries, while we're close to the top (different story for our indigenous people though).

Personally I feel that for most of us, if you eat lots of fruit & veggies and are reasonably physically active you shouldn't need to fixate on weight too much. There's a whole bell curve of natural physical types.

I vary from a best of 24.6 to a worst of 26.1 and am usually right on the dividing line between normal and overweight at 25. At my absolute very leanest I was 22.8.

I excercise pretty reguarly so I'm not that concerned, especially as I'd blown out to 29 years ago. The 29 BMI (technically obese) was enough of a trigger point to make me start excercising.

I get to live another 34 years according to the life calculator. I wonder what I'll be driving then?
