Having a few beers last weekend with a few mates, a conversation came up about the worst pain we have each experienced.
After finding it so entertaining, and hearing some horrific experiences, I thought I would pass it onto you guys.... So let us here it:

Clipped a tree while motorbike riding. Split knee cap plus torn ligaments requiring surgery and regular dr visits to have fluid drained from my knee with a very large needle.
Spent around 2 mths or so in a brace followed by 3-4 mths of physio. Was at least 12 mths before i was fully mobile and able to get back into sport. The pain was indescribeable. |

Fell out of a tree, broke both wrists(compound fractures) and cracked two vertibrae in my lower spine. So since age 13 i've had ongoing back pain. The initial fall was pretty painful too.
Have also had my jaw broken in two places and that was incredibly painful, even more so after the surgery to reset it.

The worst pain I have ever had was having my chest drains, leg drain and pacemaker wires removed without pain killers. I was given the option of morphine after my op but told I would have to stay in hospital longer, so I said "no I am a big man, I will be fine" (was 16 at the time). Let's just say although I got to fly home earlier I wish I had had the morphine. I can't describe the pain, it is one of those you would have to experience it type things. I have a constant reminder of it as the leg drain for my femoral artery actually damaged nerves in my leg and I have constant pins and needles on the inside of my right thigh down to my knee.

Definitely some painful sounding experiences peoples.
I have been reasonably lucky but I have 2 experiences that are close on the pain-o-meter. The first was fracturing my sternum when we rolled my cousins hilux. I didn't really feel the pain until a day or two later which made me almost drop to the ground in pain. Under doctors orders I couldnt do any sport, lifting or even driving for 3 months. Number 2 happened last monday. I was drilling out spot welds on the front of my brothers EB fairmont ready to swap the damaged front for a straight one. Anyway while drilling the drill bit grabbed and snapped and somehow the power drill slipped out of my hands and landed drill bit first into the top of my right foot. Seeing as I only had thongs on it hurt to say the least. I have never seen blood literally squirting before and that scared the crap out of me. With no one around and no car with me I had to jump onto the ride on mower and head home a few blocks away. From there I got a lift to the hospital. The damage was a deep cut and some ligament damage.

Broke my sacrum racing speedway sidecars 12 years ago and fractured my neck same year, same way. 200'kph crashes tend to do that. Been in pain ever since. To make matters worse, I'm a full time mechanic and use my back all day long bending into engine bays.

Playing rugby, went to dive on the ball and landed on it with my chest - the ball was verticle so the pointy side facing up.
Another player landed on me at the same time and the force of the blow tore my sternum, just split it in two like a split piece of mango being bent back (the sternum is cartilage). effing painful! Anyway, what I learned was that the sternum holds your ribcage together, so when split like this my ribs popped open like a spring. Breathing is controlled by the muscles in your chest and is completely reliant on your rib cage being attached to the sternum. The physio had to physically breath for me by pressing down on my chest and then letting my chest rise. Do yourself a favour, if you want to imagine the pain of this, hit your sternum with your knuckles... just tap really hard, then times it by about 1000. I've had a lot of knee injuries, operations, cuts, broken fingers, ribs, toes etc, but nothing comes close to this pain. |

For me it was either sliding down the road after i was cut off on the pushbike sending me flying. Or misjudging a dirt jump...
or having the brake snap off jamming in and locking the front wheel sending me and my testicles through the stem/handlbars and into the ground.. or avoiding T boning an XR6 who decided to quickly chuck a left and having that same brake-snapping bike slide out as i swerve thanks to surprisingly horrid tyres. That bike has been long stolen and has hopefully killed the theif. Front wheel was held on via cable tie and the brake shoes of an old pair of v brakes, handlebar was bent from another tyre related stack, crank was thouroughly rooted, slipping crunching in some gears, creaking bearings, no rear brake.... Or copping the scope of a 270 odd cal rifle to my forehead leaving a nice permanent scar. I count myself lucky i guess.

Sliding down a handrail on a coal stacker because i was in a hurry to reconfigure it... and tearing my ball sack open on a bit of weld and my right testicle falling out !
(football shorts) The on site nurse was as gentle as she could be but the trip to Rockhampton Mater Hospital took an eternity (3 hours)up the Capricorn Hwy and i will never forget that pain ... |

was about 16yo playing basketball jumped up to block a shot landed on the guys foot, my foot did a full 180 degree turn tried playing on for another 5 minutes but couldn't handle the pain anymore. went to hospital ruptured a couple ligaments in my ankle was on crutches for 2 weeks.
when i was about 17 getting 14 stitches in my hand without anaesthetic, i said something that offended the doctor and he only used anaesthetic on half the cut, i told the doctor i can feel it and may need more anaesthetic, he ignored it, even the nurse told him to put more, but he didn't. i just let him finish it not letting him get the better of me. the nurse reported him, after the incident. he was gone by the time i got back to get my stitches out my brother John maybe has the 2 worst imaginable. 1) my other brother Joe threw a spear, it got stuck in John's head. my old man first beat Joe for throwing it then 10 minutes later took John too the hospital on the motorbike with a 1m spear imbedded about 5cm into his head 2) we were at our farm tearing down a carport, he was sitting on top of it, then it collapsed it somehow caught his manhood and sliced it at the head halfway thru, the old man didn't take him to hospital str8 away. he waited a couple hours till we finished working as the farm was about a 90min drive away he didnt want to drive back again. he lost alot of blood (it looked like a rainbow paddlepop ) but has had 2 kids so all good Last edited by prasac; 25-05-2011 at 01:27 PM. |

ive had nothing as bad as the sternum story luckily.
when i was younger, slipped over and glass sliced my right calf open into the muscle, somehow charcoal got in the would from where i landed, doctors had to use toothbrushes to get the charcoal out of the muscle :-/ drilled into fingertip before, that hurts haha almost lost tip of finger twice, sliced them open, tips hanging by skin. some cool scars as a result...but fingers bleed too much imo haha

Taking off and landing.... the change of pressure I felt in my head was the worst pain I have ever experienced..... |

I've broken plenty of bones, had a major (6m) fall onto concrete, dislocated joints, had a major hit in the groin and all the rest of it and the worst pain, beyond all others I have had by far was a toothache. I probably came close to OD'ing on prescription pain killers and they simply didn't do anything. The only relief I could find was in drinking a couple of bottles of rum in a session - and I didn't really even get tipsy from it. As it happened, the root was growing into my jaw and I had to have it removed without the benefit of anesthesia. That was the only pain I have ever felt where I could have burst into tears.... but I didn't because I'm hard as |

When i snapped my achilles tendon.....felt like i had been hit across the back of the ankle with a machete. You could actually hear it make a loud popping sound as it ruptured. Aaahhhhh the memories.
But the worst pain was when i had to sell my XY when i split the the ex, but the suffering was a little easier when i told her we'd go 50 / 50 with the house......she got the outside.....i got the inside. |

the sternum one wins i think .
my worst pains were , after umbilical hernia surgery , when i woke up i flet no pain , then the nurse asked how bad the pain is , in about 10 seconds i was rocking all over the place with pain , it was an 11 out of 10 . if i'd had a death button to stop the pain i'd of instantly pushed it . the closest to that was eyeball pain , a pressure test tore the cornia and the doc didnt tell me and sent me home , 1/2 hour later i was pulled over on the side of the road screaming , hailed a taxi , the poor driver , had to bare with me all the way to hospital . |
