Surely everyone is a year early? Same happened 10 years ago and probably every time the calendar ticked over to a year ending in zero...
Was there a year 0? Surely the new decade starts in 2021?

A decade is a span of 10 years. It can start at whatever point you choose. Therefore, you can say that the decade of the “twenty twenties” started on 1 January 2020.
The two hundred and second decade since the start of the Anno Domini calendar begins next year.

An interesting question!
Conventional / Christian (Gregorian) goes straight from 1BC to 1AD. Funnily enough the concept of zero came in "just in time" in 3BC in the middle east, although the Indians popularised it 500-1000 years later. The Japanese perfected the Zero in 1939 |

Look at school style number charts.
Some start at 0 and the first line goes to 9. Others start at 1 and the first line finishes at 10. Hence the confusion I believe that the decade doesn't start till next year, but I confess to using both number charts when teaching kindy so what do I know

Just add a curve ball as well that every Earth year is approximately 365.25 days.

Year zero was the preceding 365 days prior to 1 AD

Nope. It went from 1BC to 1AD.
It's not quite that simple but the short answer is there was no year 0.

Yeah i get that, you are right it is not that simple - 1bc is generally recognised as year zero which is the preceding 365 days prior to 1ad
Complicated enough to create an iso on it

There is NO Year Zero in the Gregorian calendar. Therefore the epoch, millennium, century, and decade, commenced 01/01/0001. "THE current Decade" will finish 31/12/2020. That said, if you were to refer to something else, such as "The 20's" then clearly that has already started.

I am merely pointing out this is an international standard that defines year 0 as 1bc - that is without the debate of 1ad actually being anywhere from 7bc through to 2 bc - gregorian - julian or Egyptian of which they were based on
The question was not asked "is there a year zero in the gregorian calender"

Yep...December 31st 2000 was the end of the 20th century..Gee , weren't there some arguments on that at the time but unless you are one year old on the day you're born that's true. On that then there is 358 days (due to this being a leap year of course) after today , 8th Jan, of this decade .

Sure, if you call the 50s from 1950 to 1959 thats' OK. But the 1950s are the SIXTH decade in the 20th century, NOT the FIFTH decade of the 19th century. The SIXTH decade goes from 01/01/51 to 31st Dec 1960 !!
Of course the new decade begins 01/01/2021. But again the 2020s are the THIRD decade in the 21st century, NOT the 2nd decade of the 20th century. In the same way the 21st century began on 01/01/2001, NOT in 2000 or 2100. Most people (especially the media, who generally have arts degrees not science or engineering degrees) said the first year of the new century was 2000, but they can't count. The end of the FIRST year (1 AD) was 31st Dec 0001, so the end of the FIRST decade was 31st Dec 0010 & the therefore the FIRST year of the 2nd decade (the TEENS) began on the 01/01/0011 (not 0010 !!).
