TOKYO, Japan -- Three-time grand prix winner Norifumi Abe of Japan has been killed in a street crash when his 500cc scooter collided with a truck making an illegal U-turn, police have revealed on Monday.

The 32-year-old ploughed into the truck while it was turning in the Tokyo suburb of Kawasaki.

In 1994, while racing in his home championship, Abe had a chance to race at the 1994 Japanese Grand Prix as a 'wild card'.

He was challenging strongly for a remarkable victory until three corners from the finish when he fell off.

His impressed Kenny Roberts' Yamaha team sufficiently to be offered two more rides in the 500cc championship that year.

Abe finished sixth in both and was given a full-time 500cc ride for the 1995 season.

He took his first podium finish in 1995, and his first win and fifth overall a year later. He moved to the D'Antin team in 1999, won at Rio that year, and won again at Suzuka a year later, amidst two seasons on less competitive machinery, in which his solid finishing ensured that his 100 per cent record of top 10 championship finishes continued.

Abe was less happy under MotoGP regulations but when he was moved to Yamaha's returning World Superbike squad for 2005, despite having less support than Noriyuki Haga and Andrew Pitt, he finished in the championship top 10.

In 2006 he did not make a podium and this year he competed in the All-Japan Superbike Championship, again on a Yamaha.

I saw a tribute listed for him on youtube and wondered what that was about.


On a scooter though, its like fat girls, all fun and games till your friends see you. Sorry Nori, Im sure you had a sense of humour though.

At least it was a 500 cc maxi scooter.

Reports suggest other than the scooter instead of a Rover it was similar to another famous motorcyclist's, Mike (the bike) Hailwood's death crash:

On Saturday, 21 March 1981, Mike Hailwood set off in his Rover SD1 with his children Michelle and David to collect some fish and chips. He returned along the A435 Alcester Road through Portway Warwickshire near his home in Tanworth-in-Arden. A truck made an illegal turn though the barriers into the central reservation. The Rover hit it. Michelle, aged nine, was killed instantly; Mike and David were taken to hospital. Mike died two days later age 40. David survived. The lorry driver was fined £100.

I doubt the Japanese truck driver will get off so lightly given the National Hero status these riders get in Japan.

I put this on a motorcycle site I run a few days ago. "Oct 8 - News - Norick Abe is the third in a recent run of three road racing deaths in Japan. Moriwaki tester Masao Okuno and Dunlop tester Noriyasu Numata both recently died from injuries on a racetrack while last weekend Norick Abe was killed in a road traffic accident "

R.I.P oldmate, he started in GP very young, was a talented rider (albeit crash prone) and always had a smile for the cameras, i remember him drifting the 2 stroke Yammie around turn 11 at the the Island in 98.

The commentators would ask if Norick had "picked his bale yet" at the start of each race.
