Default Drive Car Of The Year 2006 - Small Car Under $20,000

I dunno how many of yous know about the Drive COTY '06. Ford Fiesta (LX) took 2nd place.

The Ford attracted more negatives than positives, copping a particularly big black mark for its lack of standard anti-lock brakes - the only car in the entire field of 48 dCOTY nominees to miss out.

""The Fiesta's lack of ABS came back to bite it again during Phase Two of testing on our closed circuit. The Ford skidded through the wet 80km/h emergency stop test with the wheels locked, pulling up several metres later than its ABS-equipped peers. A real pity, for it flew through the slalom and emergency swerve/recover tests with poise and predictability beyond its rivals.

The Ford rated highly on the road for its flexible engine, cornering abilities and all-round fun-factor, but a requirement for premium unleaded and short gearing, which gives a sprightly feel at the cost of cruising quiet, saw it marked down. So did the numerous buzzes and rattles
.""

I dont think they only test base model, if so... they should've tested 1.3l Jazz GLi. Can you get the WQ Zetec manual for under $20,000 driveaway?

This is just Drive COTY, it's not the ACOTY.

drive have been known to be anti-ford biased anyway. however, the yaris is a car with quite a few "groundbreaking" developments for a small car. multiple airbags is a big winner, and i think it also has one of the larger interiors for its class. the smaller motor shouldve let it down though.

What's this bit about a requirement for premium unleaded etc mean? (Ive already established that Fiesta will run on ULP as per Ford website, Salesman that sold car to mum said so lol, from feedback from AFF members on a thread I posted about re this matter.) As mum picks up up new LX 5 Door - Auto next Sat. Im trying to convice her to run 95 Ron at least majority of time without joy atm. Im assuming the comment relates to Fiesta's NVH levels would be lower on PULP? :eclipsee_

^^^ Yeah, I guess Drive hasnt done their homework thoroughly. With PULP, it'd cost u around $100 more annually (98RON) compared to ULP... people tend to blow up things out of proportion, especially on how expensive PULP is.

I think Robjh80 meant "which car won the small car under $20,000 category".

Ford should have provided them with the auto 5dr as that's what actually sells.
