https://www.drive.com.au/news/us-gov...onnected-cars/
"UPDATE, Tuesday 24 September 2024: Details of the US Commerce Department's plans to prohibit the use of hardware and software from China in new cars have now been outlined. The US Government has confirmed its intention to stop Chinese technology from being used in autonomous and connected cars sold in the US, with concerns they could share sensitive information with entities overseas – or be shut down remotely. The limitations on software from China could be imposed as soon as 2026, with a ban on Chinese hardware – such as semiconductors and control units – to come into effect in 2029." OK, so a lot going on here. There's protectionism, great power geopolitical competition, new Cold War supply chains developing, harvesting of data in the IoT, the issue of who owns the data, the idea of remote control after the exploding pagers and walkie talkies... It would have been nice if a car could just be a car. You know, turn it on, drive it somewhere, turn it off. Instead it is so much more, and the US is realising a potentially large security risk in it being so.

What so many people fail to understand is that this goes completely out the window, as soon as you involve China.
Although corporate China is woefully corrupt, and inefficient, everything they do is with the directed goal of furthering the long-term interests of the Chinese state. Obviously companies allover the world are capturing and storing our data. I'd be surprised if the NSA doesn't have massive visibility across most of what is out there. The difference is that the NSA won't be providing their data to thousands of American companies to assist with Industrial Espionage.

Agree completely, doesn't help that the automotive industry are complete potatoes when it comes to security of their embedded systems

Surely this doesn’t fall outside the do-gooders’ bleating refrain?

If the yanks are that worried about security, then shut down the internet, the world would be a better place to live in, no more electronic security risks, B.S, scams, no more of you on social media blah blah blah.

It's crazy - or empowering, depending on your view - that this even exists: https://dimo.org/news/dimo-explained This also means that when I'm looking at a new car, I have to ask the sales staff just how the data is recorded, who it's shared with, what's shared - and if they are doing this despite me supposedly the owner of data I generate. Does the data include biometric data when a driver cam is included? Get familiar with reading privacy policies.

For anyone weary of creating a connected app for every basic human function that exists, like driving, this is comedy gold. Every bubble has it's incomprehensible froth and these ideas are right up there for Tech/AI Bubble 2.0. J.K.Galbraith would be proud.

It’s like Bluetooth toilet seats that work out the weight of your dump and have a social media plugin. Imagine leaving the default settings on your status update: “Sprintey just passed 1.3kg of stool at 7:32AM”

And this 4yo one's a bit more on-point on what data is recorded (setting: US) and what happens to the data:

I recall when twitter was new there was a fellow (may or may not have been Sprintey) who was broadcasting every fart with a device he had implanted in his underwear
