A mate at work has just built a new PC and instead of loading all his old files onto it from his old PC has decided to network them. The network is working fine, if you have one PC connected to the internet you can surf the net from the other PC, so it definately works.
The problem is he can not access his files on the old PC. There have been many hours spent trying! Could the reason be that his new PC is running XP and the old one is running ME? Or any other thoughts?

You have to allow sharing of the hard drives. The icon comes up with a hand beneath the drive on the "my computer" screen. That's for XP to XP, anyway.
You can select that in the properties of the drive, I believe. |

You will need to create an account on the xp machine with the same username and password as the account on the windows ME machine. If there is no account on the ME machine then create one. Make sure the folders that are being shared are shared out with pemission for everyone, oh and turn simple file sharing off on the xp machine.

shouldn't have any issues.
go to start, run, \\COMPUTER_NAME\C$ and see what happens. It can be done from either PC.

Davocol has the best idea. XP doesn't like letting W98 in. Create the account on the W98 machine, ensure they both have the same workgroup name ... actually share out a folder on each machine and then try.
I don't think ME has an Administrative share ( C$) but to be honest, I have sucessfully evaded it so I am assuming its the same as any other W98 flavour. try \\machine name and see if anything comes up. Faiing that, try: \\ipaddress . If everything is right and this doesn't work .. then somethign isn't right |

There has to be someway for network XP and ME, I've got XP and Mac OSX networked so it has to work from windows to windows.

ME, all your problems are there. ME = Megga Ee.e..... something bad starting with E....
On the ME computer, search for the XP computer, and map its drives. Also you will require passoword's to access the XP drives from the ME box if irrc. I changed my home network to all W2k and Linux host/router/NAT box.

davocol has it..
generally at the remote sites we deal with, you make the 9x windows long on to the network using a pre specified user name/password.. then jsut make sure the account is on the xp machine exactly the same.. and simple file sharing is turned off.. (make the more networking aware os the server.. in this case, thats xp.) then share out a folder and make sure 'everyone' has full access in the security tab aswell as the sharing tab-permissions button. then of course connect to it using pcname\sharename.. should be all you need. (im assuming you have ip addresses assigned to these two computers, and the subnet etc is right?) ^scrap that.. must work if net works. |
