Default Is 98 RON worth it with AU XR8 S3 220?

I have a AU XR8 s3 and have run it for years on 95. Does 98 benefit the engine over 95? An RACV study showed that financially it is not worth it given their tests.

I dont think it makes any difference on the AU V8, there is no knock sensor, the ECU wont change any timing tables or anything else, it wont know the difference.

So unless you are operating under some kind of conditions where the engine is detonating (very unlikely if it is stock), then I dont really see the point.

Advantages are difficult to quantify in this instance I guess. I know some of the 98's advertise they have additives that keep injectors clean and so forth.

The 220kw XR8’s ran too much timing high up in the rpm range, and a lot of owners like myself could not run anything less than 98 without issues. But others have had no issues. Like lumen8 has already mentioned, if it doesn’t ping with lower grades, there’s no power advantage in running 98.
