Pure fluke I stumbled across this one.
The ad itself is pretty awesome as a whole. (are you watching Ford Marketing Department?) The guy in the Corolla, chases down a yellow blaze XB GT coupe, and they proceed to drag off at the lights. edit - watch for the bit where the hay bales fall off the truck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM5530TwmoE

It had the same/similer scarf that Dog wore in his landmark role, a neat tie in given that The Interceptor was a XB GT...

Lovely old VHS, you can see he accidentally hit the record button with the tape still in the VCR because I can see the old Totally Wild credits appear.
It's a good example of the bygone era of the automotive industry in Australia when manufactures would use Bathurst as a way to prove their product since the story of the clip is about a Corolla bound for Bathurst. |

Thats a terrific ad, and I feel so ashamed that in todays world that ad would be frowned upon because it has a stunt driver doing a couple of carefully practised and well executed slides and J turns, but others I'm sure would label it as "dangerous driving, antisocial behaviour and hooning" all of which are offenses evidently punishable by life imprisonment.

It's a good example of how Toyota market against their weaknesses.
Corolla is not fast and does not handle all that well, and here is one enormous Toyota ad trying to convince us otherwise! It's a lesson for Ford really. Ford Australia need to start advertising against the things that the mainstream public considers are it's weaknesses - the Bogan element, reliability, dealer experience, gas guzzler.... The biggest thing Ford have ever done to turn around a public-perception issue was the Falcon XP endurance run. Is it time for something like that again? Lukeyson

The corolla did actually handle very well, and did sit flat with heaps of grip. No way a EA falcon or VN commodore even VN HSV of that time would keep up in the tight corners down the great ocean road.

+1 those 100kw ae92s went very well, and the 86kw ae82 before them were even further ahead of their time.

I cracked up when he was flicking it around to dodge those hay bails. Funny stuff. |

Acursed latte sipping hairdresser hoon in the Corolla - Lock him up for attempted street racing..
Pretty cool segment - even if it IS a Toyota. Would never get away with making a TV segment like that these days.. |

Haha, makes the eighties look like it was fun.
Funny now to see how many times this guys licence would be torn up by todays standards. Hmmm, maybe things were more fun back then.

I'm still trying to get my head around the idea of Toyota ever doing an ad that actually promotes their cars as being sporty...race bred even.... and that handles well.
Maybe Toyota should start making ads like that again. Also remember the Chicken Coup ad from back in the days when Street Machine was my mag of choice. Last edited by delete94; 12-06-2012 at 09:27 PM. Reason: mistake |

Great ad. Informative and funny. Loved the dog.
With a few exceptions, I think the advertisers these days want to target middle aged people who are more concerned about their image (what people think about them) than the quality and performance of the car. Thats because they think most people are insecure- which is probably right in this world of permanent unemployment, underemployment and dodgy politics. We could probably sell heaps of our gear by showing those idiot reality TV contestants driving around in our beloved Falcons and Territory. Advertisers know: Never think the audience is remotely intelligent. The general public are gross, stupid and dumb. We are unthinking swill, who will gladly pay $40K to surprise our spouse by buying a Jeep. Woof! |
