I was wondering what you all think about rear wing spoliers on modern road cars today?
I mean the XR6's still have wing style spoilers as standard, yet on the Commodore SV6 and SS's they come standard with boot lip spoilers, and wing spoilers are an optional extra. Lets face it, apart from giving the car that sporty look and style, they add no performance on a road car, and just add unneccessary weight. Also, wing spoliers make washing and waxing the boot lid a bit of a pain. So what's your opinion? Do you think they have had their day? ... Or do you think they still have that sporty appeal on modern cars today? |

Depends on the car. On a vf they look fantastic, on the fg gt they looked good too, on the xr models they weren't executed that well.
I think the vf looks good with the lip spoiler or the wing spoiler. Really depends on the car, but overall on most models, they day of high spoilers seem to be limited. Seems lip spoilers are the modern thing these days, vf commodore, Chrysler 300 srt, wrx etc

That’s a tough one as I prefer lip spoilers but some cars with wings look sensational and tuff as.
A wing spoiler on a factory stock entry level sedan or coupe without the additional body kit to balance out the car looks crap. A wing spoiler on a kitted high performance car can and often does look great. A car that focuses more on prestige will always look better with an understated lip spoiler over an in your face wing. It's a balancing act that needs care and thought to get it right and if in doubt, go for a lip spoiler. |

I prefer no spoiler or lip spoiler.
But then if I were buying a current model STI I would go for the wing as I don't like the look of it with the lip spoiler. Really depends on the car, don't like it on VF's or FGX's. You wouldn't change to a lip spoiler on a Plymouth Superbird!!! |

After having a BA XR6 then BA XR8 and buying recently a BA GTP at first i thought the GTP spoiler is well over the top but after a few weeks have just accepted it to be honest, helped somewhat by plenty of positive comments from people about the car in general.

I quite like the look of most spoilers. Some are just too big and don't suit though

My belief is they do add visual appeal to a car, but I wish there was more effort put into the actual benefit of it, ie downforce at speed.

They're not race cars. Very few of us on this forum would benefit from 'race engineered' spoilers on our vehicles so in saying that the benefit of them is purely visual and thats it, wheather its a lip or traditional spoiler

You don't have to engineer a spoiler for race purposes.
Added downforce for added traction has got to be a good thing. But everything comes at a cost, so purely visual appeal it is then...

I added Typhoon legs to the spoiler on my XR6. Partly because it was impossible to clean underneath without opening the boot, but mostly because I preferred the look.
Depends on the car though. When they suit the shape and are executed well.

Wouldn't like to try and control my BF GT at high speed without the wing. Hard to control with it as it is. And yes I think putting a spoiler on every sundry eco box, has somewhat made them unfashionable.

Just about every new modern car looks the same with or without spoilers... Depends on the car whether it suits or not.

Indifferent I suppose. GT-E has a lip spoiler, TS50 has the infamous ironing board. The combos that each have work well as they are from the factory, wouldn't change them.
Will be possibly looking into an aftermarket spoiler for the TS50 for track days soon, but would refit the factory spoiler for normal duties. |

I'm not overly fussed, but they do look better on some cars than others, and some can give a bit of a visual clue to where the end of the car is when backing.
On the other hand on some cars they look like rice . |

Haven't liked many regular spoilers since I was 15.
Lip spoiler or nothing is the way to go I reckon. |

I think most Falcons need them to look good, given how plain the base models are. AU's and FG's I think are the worst in that manner. That being said I've got no desire to stick one on my BF, I'm happy making it look better with raked suspension.

I personally think that every Falcon since the EA has looked better with a factory wing spoiler than without (although I can appreciate the appeal of a classy Fairmont or G6E with either lip spoilers or none at all).
I sometimes think that brands like BMW or Audi should have Falcon-style spoilers as an optional extra on their performance models, as if done right I reckon they could look good. The enormous wing on the Jaguar XFR-S wasn't executed very well imo, but at least it's something different compared to other Euro cars. All the recent Commodores I think look better with the factory wing as well.

Thinking car design by now should have progressed well beyond ineffective bolt-on rear spoilers.
Back in the 70's & 80's, it seemed like some thought went into their design & function (eg for racing homologation purposes on Falcon GT's & Brock Commodores), and they set apart performance cars from the lesser models. In this day and age they have become nothing more than a generic and obligatory slapped-on component affixed to every 2nd car. |

It's just personal taste, a good mate of mine says they are called a 'spoiler' for a reason because they spoil the look of the car, I quite like them if they suit the car, not a fan of after market ones though.
I like the factory style ones.

Most spoilers get the thumbs up from me. As mentioned by others, it all depends on the car it's bolted to.

Has anyone ever had a spoiler omitted from a car when ordering a brand new one being built from the factory?

As a general rule I hate spoilers though I do like the lip style spoilers ie Force 6/8 and EB/D XR series so I thought there was no way I could live with the giant wing on my GT-P and planned to take it off when I bought it. But then I saw one without a spoiler and realised it just ties the whole kit in so I kept it on.

Wish it possible from Ford AU, but interestingly Subaru offer it on their STi range.

from todays standard, should be an option only, I believe on most vehicles they are not suited. however individual taste, my own opinion,
They don't help with fords since au onwards, tends to rust out the boots. However I was a semi-fan of the au1 double spoiler, apparently they had actual down force.

I apparently wasn’t the only one as HSV has now seen the light and offers the option of wing or lip on their cars. AMG offers spoiler and aero kits in general as options on some of its cars. I’m a lover of lip spoilers but I’d be happy to have either of these cars with the full kit and in your face spoilers. Sometimes a statement has to be made. |

I have always liked the low-profile styling of a lip spoiler but I agree it depends on the car and its overall intention of the rest of the body kit. A Holden designer has gone on record in Wheels magazine recently saying that their customers expect more sophisticated and integrated types of spoilers.
