Default Lest we forget.

I know most here won't need a reminder and this is to let people post whatever messages they think are suitable about Anzac Day.

For me it is to remember my grandad who fought on the Western Front in 1916 / 17 ; my father who fought in North Africa and to my four uncles who went to New Guinea.

Lest we forget.

Peter.

my pop wanted to go to war for his country but was under 18 and therefore was not allowed to go (WW2, not gallipoli itself). Greatest respect for him, thou I never really knew him and that he didn't actually go to war. I also have the same respect for every digger. The greatest scarifice for one to give, is your own life. Lest we forget thoses that gave their lives for the life and freedom for family, friends and millions of people they didn't even know. Some came home, thou wounded, others who died, died so young. May they rest in peace knowing the gratitude of their country.

Best day of the year tomorrow. Take a moment to remember those past and present who have served and those that never made it home and paid the ultimate sacrifice. To my warrior brothers that didn't make it home, us boys will be having a beer for you, Lest We Forget.

My grandfather passed early last year, so I'm heading up to the Sunshine Coast for the dawn service with my father.

He marched for the first time in 2010, representing the last of his engineering unit.

They were stationed in Egypt, and as the war progressed saw action in North Africa and up through Italy.

He never talked about the war much, and when he did his voice echoed with painful memories, yet also with a certain fondness of the good times they had on R&R.

He climbed the pyramids, saw Venice and the canals and met lifelong friends in Italy.

One moment that he used to recall often was a football game taking place near his workshop in Egypt. Everyone was running for the ball and as it bounced, was promptly replaced by a German mortar shell, smack bang in front of them.... needless to say people scattered left, right, and centre however luckily it was a dud!

I'll never know what he saw, or what it was like to be shot at or shelled, or push waves of blood from the back of tanks or know the pain of losing friends in the field.

I do know however, that he was a great man, he was my grandfather, my mentor, an inspiration to me and his sacrifice will never be forgotten so long as I shall live, and I will demonstrate the same honour and respect for our service men and women as I do for him.

Lest we forget

Amen, let us all reflect on the reason we are still here enjoying our freedom unlike other countries/nations.

On 25 April 1915 a new world was born

God bless all the ANZAC's and may you all rest in peace knowing that you have given your lives for us.

The Spirit of ANZAC is invincible. It is the flame that burns forevermore in the heart of every true Australian and New Zealander. Today we stand safe and free, clothed with all the privileges and rights of citizens in these great free countries. And all these things - liberty, security, opportunity, the privileges of citizenship - we owe to those men who fought, endured, suffered, and died for us and for their country. Their deeds and their sacrifices gave us the invincible, the intangible, the Spirit of ANZAC.

Lest We Forget

My family and I got up early and went to the Dawn Service. Stood there for about 2 hours. Backs sore, feet are sore. How lucky am I to be able to do this. And I am so thankful for being able to go and spend a minute in silent reflection, to listen to the Bugle player playing one of the greatest pieces of music ever.

I spent the morning with a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat!

They shall grow not old
As we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We shall remember them
Lest we forget

God bless our ANZACS, past, present and future!

Just got home from the city dawn service. Apparently everyone else had the same idea of rocking up half an hour early (5am, rather than the suggested 5.30) so I was pretty much at the back.

It was fantastic to see so many people standing there in the pouring rain (on and off again) paying their respects.

Something I didn't get though were people being wheeled out on stretchers. I saw at least 4 or 5 people being wheeled towards the paramedic tent.

For now though, I'm off to sleep. Been up since 8 yesterday, I feel a good rest coming on.

Lest we forget.

We should never forget our past & present servicemen.
I've been doing a bit of family history investigation. My 2 grandfathers (brothers) were aged 21 & 23 when they enlisted for WW1. The youngest was married just 2 months prior to being sent to Gallipolli in the 7th light horse. He lasted approx 6 months - before being killed by a shell blast that also killed his CO & several others. He didn't even know that his wife was pregnant & that his son was born just a few weeks after his death.....
His elder brother fared slightly better. He was in the artillery & also saw action at Gallipolli - and having survived, was then sent to Belguim. He was killed in action about 7 months after his younger brother.
I'll have a few quite minutes & beers for them today. Poor buggers had their lives in front of them & made the supreme sacrifice for their country.
