Default Merbau or Jarrah oil on Pine???

I have a treated pine deck. One half is much older than the other. It's time to oil it. Prep is already done.

Choices choices!

I don't really like the way the pine colour decking oil looks, a bit greeny last time I oiled it. I don't want to stain the deck. The natural looks a bit too yellowy, and there's the two tone pine boards problem.

I was wondering....

Would it be okay to put decking oil (either water or oil based) on the pine if it's a Merbau or Jarrah colour?

I was thinking F&W products (parent company of Cabots).

Anybody done it?

GK

Got some scrap pieces? Perhaps get the smallest tins of the stain you want and try it out to see how the colours come up.

I vote Merbau, but either would look great on your deck (no kiwi accent here.....).

We just done it at my parents place on a new deck. Merbau decking stain on a treated pine deck, rather than oil. Came up great. Lots harder to do when the deck is down though. We had to use a brush to get in between the boards. I'm using cabbots natural oil on my Merbau deck.

I vote to forget ANY of the decking oils..
I have tried them all and 6 months has been the limit, even with Cutek and Flood supreme performance oils (both as dear as poison!)
Last year I tried Watyll decking 2in1 which is a stain and laquer... Absolute magic stuff.
Even on a merbau salt water pool feature!
Do NOT go merbau colour though.. It'll look orange... Jarrah perfect!

I just re did my treated pine decking, its 11 years old. I have always used Organoil Jarrah.

Thanks for all the speedy replies fellas! Much appreciated.

The Wattyl looks good Charliewool. How do you go with subsequent coats? What prep is needed for that?

I did my front verenda (merbau decking) just before xmas after the oriiginal 2in1 18 months prior... It does cop the sun, plus it's high traffic.
Light sand 1st with the orbital, a good scrub with napisan in hot water. Let dry and go for it.

I have over 80 sq mts of merbau decking, garden edging, planter boxes, pool feature etc, and I have literally tried every oil there is... Intergrain looked magic for 2 months.. Cabots similar.
Flood decking oil (google it) was the best out of any of the decking oils. But 5-6 months maximum.
Of all places, at Bunnings I was talking to an old guy who works in the paint section and telling him about how crap all these decking stains and oils are... He said to go for the wattyl 2 in 1.. And raving how good it was.
No probs, give us a gallon mate.. "Um, we don't sell wattyl at Bunnings, try Masters"
It is THE best I've tried by a mile

For older decks I use a merbau decking stain,it hides a lot of imperfections you get in the old timber....all of my clients have been very happy with the results.

First of all, thanks heaps again for all the posts. It's an awesome forum!

Well myself and the Mrs are back from Bunnings!!

We went with Merbau (Mrs wanted it) and I went for water based. I got put off a little with the turps clean up etc, etc.

I went with Aquadeck in the end. I have heard both good and bad reports about this product, but from what I can tell, it's a good product if you ensure you don't apply too much per coat. Reading the Whirlpool forum and others, that seems to be the biggest mistake people have made with decking oil of all types.

Well, I'm in for a penny, in for a pound now, so this time tomorrow, I'll know how it's all panned out! LOL!

Thanks again all.

Also be aware of a product called "PROTECTIMBER", available from http://www.mabons.com.au/. Company based in QLD.
They also sell CELLAVIT oil/sealer, specifically for decking.

PROTECTIMBER is made with D.O.T ( Diosodium Octoborate Tetrahydrate ) & pre mixed with Mono Ethylene glycol & Benzalkonium Chloride.

It is designed specifically for the treatment of outdoor/indoor timbers & keeps them protected against weather, fungus & insect invasion. Exposed outdoor timber still needs to be oiled or painted for LIFE LONG protection.

The simple idea is you wet down the wood, apply the D.O.T & allow it to soak in,(water helps the timber absorb the DOT) reapply & then seal it. Mabons is based in QLD but has a rep in Melbourne, Vic'.

When I rebuilt my Hartley 16ft (timber boat) I used D.O.T inside to protect against insect invasion & water damage. 5lt cost me $95 incl' freight to Tassie from Melb'.
It was recommended to me buy members of the "Boatdesign.net" forums & I would recommend it for any timber.
