Default Nokia Apps and Widgets Review

Hey the idea is to gather together a list of what we like on the Nokia Apps front.

Please included the model Phone Used on and the cost.
iPhone people have plenty of apps, and this should help demonstrate that Nokia Does too

I personally am not so much interested in the cool applications, rather the ones we use each day.

Here is one for starters

App Name:Coming Next
Reviewed on: Nokia N8
Homescreen Widget:Yes
Cost: Free

Calendar info at a glance
Allows up to 12 future items to be displayed on a Homescreen, great for on glance at a list view of your calendar.
I use it daily
It takes up one homescreen area for each 4 entries you want on your display.
When any of these is opened you see a list view of your calendar, and colour customsation options are available.

Lists you missed events, and dsplays some info about them
Great for looking at a txt message to see what it is about quickly, without opening the message.
I use this in meetings when I feel my phone vibrate - I can quickly ascertain if it is important or not.

Doesn't seem real accurate but its inaccuracy does seem repeatable. Can be good for checking driveline angle mismatch.

Out of interest, does is integrate with other apps and/or the phone? There's talk of an N8 being a work phone and I use my calendar app extensively.

On my current phone, it'll parse street addresses so all I need do is select it and it'll load Google Maps and plot a route from my current location. If there's an email address it'll open a new message and allow me to email, same deal with a phone number.

Integrates perfectly - all it does is read your cal and display it for you - tghe default Cal Widget can only display 3 events, and will not always show the next 3 (at the moment I have only 1 displaying) This app will let me see the next 12 entries with a date, no matter how far in the future they are

In my N8 I have an option, when looking at a contact, to open the address in Ovi MAPS, and then have the free voice nav take me there.

A rudimentary phrase book - I use it for Mandarin
It allows you to navigate to a phrase via category, and then for the phrase you choose, gives you simplified Chinese, Pinyin, and plays the pronunciation through your loud speaker.

On the 5800 the sound did not work.
The Clumsy Java coder did not do the Gui interactions too well

I use this frequently when in China

It sources exchange rate data from Forex and gives you drop down lists of many currencies, and a currency converter. There is a refresh button to repull the exchange rate data - handy to control roaming data charges

The selected currencies do not remain the default - it defaults back to EUR vss USD

Wow - not as many comments as I thought.

Anyhow, on not finding the currency conversion ap that I want, I decided to write my own.
(I love how easy this is !!)

It is a widget
Plans:
Homescreen display of two rates vss AUD (CYN and USD)
Application display of the same data, plus two refresh buttons to pull the latest of each rate from the internet.
Store the retrieved rates.
Populate the rates from stored value at application start.
The rate I am using is updated hourly

Wishlist:
build in a rate converter
make the two currencies selectable (and store for startup)
make the local currency selectable (and store for startup)

So Far:
One onscreen button push CNY rate is pulled and displayed (not stored)
Other onscreen button push GM share price is displayed (yeah, it was some test code I wrote when I could not get the currency rates)
Contents of two test input fields are stored
A lot of silly diagnostic messages

Have you tried this ?
What Character sets does it support ?

I was wanting to get Chinese character support for my N8, but was put off by reports that OVI stor did not work after the install.

If you have I can TXT you some Chinese to see ;-)
PM phone Num - of course.

yeah its good modification for the n8 but there are drawbacks, its staffs up two of the screen savers on the phone (Big Clock and Sleep clock), and screws up the ovi store, so i un-installed it.

I Have done the China Characters Mod (the one that requires QT 4.7.2 and the later version of OVI Store) - this is now working perfectly for me - if only I could read Chinese ;-)

Given your stats it calculates how many calories you need to eat to loose 1kg per week, and then allows you to track your activity and eating with a progress bar showing how much more you can eat each day.

This is a Java App (IIRC) and the interface has two flaws in it - but neither of these impact its operation once you know they are there. (One is adding a note - no action button so you get stuck and have to end the app)

There is an extensive list of foods built in for you to choose from, or you can use your own custom ones.
You can combine foods into a meal - for example if you have the same breakfast each day.

I will be able to tell you if this works in 10kgs

Write a txt today and it gets sent at a predetermined date in the future.

As this needs to be able to send your message without you prompting it, this app needs to run at startup, and does unless you exit it. I can see no performance or battery issues resulting from this, but I do exit it when there is nothing in the queue.

This is a solid app, and the freeware version of one on the store. I had to sign it myself - I can find some instructions for this if anyone wants to try.

While I don't use the N8, my favourite app for any Nokia has to be the Opera Mini browser. If you do any browsing on your Nokia, this app is a pure necessity. Not only does it replace the poorly designed, RAM hogging default browser (sort of reminds me of Internet Explorer!), it will cut down your data usage to ~10% of what it formerly was, thanks to the way it renders pages.

Another app I'd recommend is JBak Taskman. Why pay for Handy Taskman when this app does everything Handy Taskman does, but better?

If you need a PDF reader, try out AlternateReader.

All listed applications are free. As an open source software user, I don't like paying for apps, when you can easily find a free app that performs the same function as the paid app while being easier to use and using less system resources. Note: A major exception is Microsoft Office; OpenOffice.org is a complete joke IMO.
