A mate of mine's offering me a good price on his car as he's just recently been disqualified for 12 months. Just wondering am I going to he continually hassled and pulled over by cops (this is in victoria btw) because its rego plate would come up on the cops' computers as being disqualified or something like that? Can anybody enlighten me on how the cops perform rego/disqualified checks on vehicles and drivers with the new ANPR, etc. tech.

The rego is of no concern, they check the drivers details, meaning the license number.
Unless the car itself attracts attention, you shouldnt have any issues. |

They put 'notes' on the persons file, not the car info, like if they are known to be a hoon, it will come up when they are checked.
They ask if you own the car as a form of checking honesty. They are going to check the details of the car anyway, so if it isnt yours, may as well just say so as they are going to find out anyway. If it is really a concern to you, just get new plates issued to the car, its only $45 or so. |

As long as you transfer it into your name, when they do a rego check and it no longer has his details flash up, you do not have a problem. If you have left it in his name, they do a random rego check and you will be pulled over, without a doubt.

Thanks guys for the info, seems your a great bunch. Just spoke with him before, and the car was actually financed by his mum and the rego is actually her name, not his.
Anyways, there's not much hassle involved with transferring the name over and getting new plates? Wondering whats the go with stamp duty and that?.. |

Might help out a bit. You also mention the car was "financed" - if this means there's an encumbrance on it (ie wtill under finance with a finance company) you might want to look into any issues that may cause when buying it.

Yep.
If there is ANY finance owing on it - walk away. You need a current RWC for it to be transferred and registered in your name. Also, use this link below to check if there is any encumbrance on the car. All you need is the rego number for it to check (its free to use). http://www.vehiclestatuscheck.vicroa...u/Default.aspx If there is an encumbrance, you need to speak to the woman who financed it. If she claims it is all paid off, ask for the piece of paper from the finance company that states this. If she cant provide it - walk. If you buy the car, and she fails to continue paying it off, it gets repo'd from YOU - and you lose everything. There is no compensation, you dont get to keep the car - nothing. YOU will have to take her to court to get anything back. |

However, if you really want the car, there’s another way of doing this. Ask her how much is owed on the car and ask for the finance details. Then ring the finance company to verify that she’s telling the truth. If she is, once you’ve agreed to the price, get two bank cheques, one for her amount and one for the finance company’s amount. If she isn’t prepared to do this, tell her where to go.

Depends on where you are and how much "profile" your mate has. If you are in a smaller city and he has been a bit naughty then there is a good chance the car is known. This is what they traffic branch do for a living and usually they are pretty good at it.
Change the rego. |

He only got done once by a cop (victoria, near western border) hiding up a farm's driveway he reckons, and hence the 12 mth suspension. So, from this, do you guys reckon the car would be 'well known'? |

Sounds like it was a one off anyway, so it wont be a car that stands out to the Police.
Dont really see what your concerned about, its not like he cuts a million laps every week and does burnout up the main street. Buy the car, drive it and see how you go. If you attract any attention, it will be because YOU attracted the attention to yourself, not because of a one off in another town a 500km away. |

I used to do express deliveries to Adelaide, except I did it in a B-Double. Knowing about freight volumes and what you earn travelling over there, the “freight” he used to cart must have been very valuable.

The upshot is....... Just do the same as you would with any private sale purchase. Nothing different and really is absolutely no dramatics required.
Just follow the rules of purchasing. Make sure the title is clear, no finance remaing, rwc supplied is above board and ensure the reg is transferred asap. There is a nothing else required ...... Just do what Vic roads require. Usually easier buying a known car than buying one from eBay ..... Can't see the drama?

If you have any concerns on the number plates, at any time after purchase you can just drop into any Vic Roads with one plate and for the princly sum of $25 you can get brand new ones instantly

if that freight had residue, he wouldnt be talking to me right now after the incident with the cops haha. It was actually a mix of confidential business documents and large sum cash payments to veg growers in SA. |

No need to worry about new plates what so ever.
The minute you change the rego into your name, that'll be the end of any connection to the previous owner as far as ANPR intercepts go. The only time you may come into any kind of problem is for one day, the day you pick up the car and take the paperwork to Vicroads. The ANPR cars & Vans in VIC dont work on a live database and "cars of interest" are downloaded into it's database prior to each shift.... so theoretically you could pick up the car at 9am, go straight to Vicroads at 10am and go past an ANPR site later in the day and get flagged for a possible suspended driver. Even if that did happen, all that would occur would you'd be pulled over, asked to provide your license and blow in the bag. On your way in 2 minutes. Hardly the end of the world. Storm in tea cup really. If the price is right, you like the car and all the other encumbrance and finance issues pan out - buy it & dont have a second thought. |
