Purchasing MB/MC Mondeo Titanium

Hi,

Looking to upgrade to Mondeo Titanium and have a few questions. I have inquired on a few and question relates to which transmission is best, powershift or 6 speed in MB?

One MB with standard auto has 2 missing stamps in log book for 30K and 45K service, but 60K was just done. The other 2 MB's have powershift with full service history.

Is it worth stretching to MC Titanium or should I avoid the powershift?

enquire as to why they're missing, could be explained that it simply wasn't stamped or was done elsewhere and again not stamped, for which you could check with whom ever did it. Unless they did it themselves?!?.

I went the MB Zetec instead of an MC (MD wasn't released) with slushbox being somewhat concerned about the DCT too, knowing what I know now, I'd probably suggest a MY13-14 MC.

I see an MB Titanium in my area daily and see it's suspension is sitting somewhat tired like. I know cause so was mine, having it refreshed 10mths ago has been the best single repair I've done to it. Kinda hesitant to recommend an MB seeing as it's older and possibly in the same boat.

Across the road from my folks their neighbour has an '10 MC TDCI DCT so far no real big issues, none at least with the DCT, but a munched up RH/R window regulator seems to be the only thing. Excessive turbo lag he complains about but I doubt he knows how to minimise it...he's also coming from a 2000 Camry so go figure.

The latest model MC you can afford is my thoughts...

Even with the DCT troubles I had with my 2012 MC LX I'd buy another in a heartbeat. I have a 96km each way commute (highway/country roads) and love driving the Mondeo. Mine has just rolled over 174,000km and still going strong.

They are cheap as chips now, especially ex fleet ones like mine. If you go through an auction house like Pickles I would suggest the fixed price ones as they at least have a statutory 5000km warranty.

It's a difficult decision. The auto in the MB is fine. I don't like the way it changes down and holds low gears on hills, but I use manual mode to get around it.

As already noted, you might have problems finding a good MB as the youngest will be 7 years old. A late model MC in good condition with a good service history might be your best bet. Don't worry about mileage.

Plus 1 vote for the MC with Powershift. 100,000 odd, no problems, and a great trans to drive "manually".
Do a search, someone has put together a thread on PS trans.

If you opt for powershift I would highly recommend buying something with warranty, either balance of manufacturer warranty or statutory used car warranty. (Be carefull with extended manufacturer warranty as I don't believe these are transferrable)

I had DCT issues with my MC but luckily the ~$5K fix was covered by stat warranty. I now know the previous owner traded the Mondeo because it had thrown up transmission malfunction errors and don't believe the dealer knew because the malfunction was infrequent and the fault codes are cleared on restart. You're unlikely to pick up some DCT issues during any test drive or inspection so IMO warranty of some kind is a must.

This is true.
If you scored 99% on your performance evaluation or final exam, you'd be stoked. But a 1% failure rate, on transmissions used around the globe in a variety of models, could yield thousands of disgruntled customers.

Looking seriously at Mondeos of a similar age, around the 2011 onwards mark.
Can somebody actually explain what the Zetec and Titanium have over the LX?

Unfortunately the information on carsales, including the individual ads, is gibberish.

• The wheels go from 16 steels, to 17 & 18 alloys. Don't care. Can easily change them.
• I'm a big fan of leather seats, but from what I have seen the Titanium has only partial with some faux suede. Probably just get some nice covers.
• Dual Zone climate. Does the Zetec get this? It would be worth having.
• Colour ICC. Despite numerous lists claiming they have this, I have not seen any. Are they referring to the display in the instrument cluster? I would probably swap out the radio for an aftermarket one anyway. 7" colour is only $200 anyway.
• Sunroof we can do without
• Adaptive CC, lane departure, and all the auto headlight stuff would be handy. But I don't know if its worth chasing a Titanium??

You pretty much have it summed up right. The one other major difference that Zetec and Titanium have over the LX, in hatchback form, is the EcoBoost turbo petrol motor + Powershift as opposed to the NA Duratec petrol. The turbo-diesel drivetrain is the same across all grades.

Listing off the top of my head, LX -> Zetec gets:

• 17" alloys
• foglights
• Convers+ HMI system (trip computer colour screen in dashboard with voice commands and sound system integration)
• 'Premium' Sony sound system (1-disc CD player with monochrome display)
• it does get the dual-zone climate control

Zetec -> Titanium adds:

• 18" alloys
• sports body kit
• keyless entry
• LED DRLs

• forward collision warning
• Alcantara/suede seats, heated front seats, 2-way power driver's seat
• electrochromatic auto-dipping rear vision mirror

• puddle lights
• power folding mirrors

For me the clinchers that made me decide on Titanium were the active safety tech to protect my family (active collision avoidance would have been even better than warnings, but beggars can't be choosers), and the sunroof which was a heart-over-head thing (and actually slightly regretted now for the loss of headroom). Most of the gizmos I've found fall into the "nice to have, but I could live without" category (even dual-zone climate, although the heated seats are a treat in Canberra), and I actively eschew the auto headlights as the high beam control is rather poor. Some things are also problematic - the car is crying out for a reversing camera and smarter head unit, but I don't want to lose the Convers+ integration with the original Sony unit. The unexpected highlight is the keyless entry, which comes in really handy when your arms are full of bags and children...

The ZETEC also gets the Auto Headlights (auto turn on/off) and auto wipers.

We had a Titanium hatch with the EcoBoost engine. Had originally planned on getting a wagon but didn't want diesel so settled on a hatch. To be honest, the amount of room and versatility afforded by the lift back hatch, the wagon would have been overkill for us.

My wife used to have MA hatch which was great then, but now with 2 young boys the wagon made more sense so that is why I went down that path.

After a week of ownership absolutely loving my Mondeo would be nice for some nice weather in Melbourne to make the most of the sunroof and the car to stay clean.

There's a good number of base models available, mostly ex-government. They seem to be frequently serviced, which I suppose is as good as I can ask.
Not sure it's worth hunting for the elusive Zetec or Titanium, given the scarcity, price premium, and the intended purpose.
Could go either way on the Hatch v Wagon, so will wait and see what turns up.

Interested that you 'upsized' from the hatch to the wagon, do you feel it makes much difference in real terms?

I likewise chose the wagon to accommodate children (though we're only up to one so far!) and dogs. I spent a long time comparing different models and put a lot of emphasis on their load space. (Mondeo wins, Commodore and Liberty are pretty close, Hyundai i40 is passable and Mazda 6 is a joke. Most SUVs are pathetic.) But lately I've been wondering if cargo space is the be all and end all. Given the liftback gives you a very long load space, it seems it should be just about as good as the wagon in most situations. And since every option currently on the market that might secede my MC is going to come with a reduction in load space (even the MD doesn't have as much room), in the future I'm going to have to learn to do more with less anyway?

My wife got rid of the hatch a few years ago as she wanted an SUV. But when I was looking I tried the hatch and then a wagon and found the wagon to be better fit.
