Default MY computer is being really wierd...

Ok, a week ago or so i booted up and got the dreaded "Windows cannot find NTFS.sys", which I fixed after a few hours of fiddling and swearing. After that, a few weird things have been happening.

1) all my Temp Sensors, Voltage Sensors, and Fan Sensors report 0 (Even in BIOS)

2) My Programs menu randomly shows all my programs on the list 3 or 4 times, making the list go beyond the edge of my sceen. right clicking and selecting Arrange by Name fixes this.

3) Windows Media Player doesn't work, just says "An Internal Player Application has occurred" (Not an overly huge problem, I just use Winamp)

4) Enemy Territory, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Quake III Arena all show "Could not initialize OpenGL Subsystem". I have reinstalled my Video Card drivers and Direct X (9.0c), however all other OpenGL dependant programs work 100%

5) Windows Update - "You must have a computer running Microsoft Windows in order to use Windows Update" (XP Pro, IE6)

6) Sygate Personal Firewall does not startup at startup, it is in the startup folder and in the startup section of the registry

7) Seems stable, unless I use InfraRed

No Virii, No Spyware.

I can't reformat, my XP CD does not Boot off the CD and my system won't boot off floppy.

Athlon 2100+
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe

Thanks

mmm... if its xp try a system restore.
When I set up computers I always put windows in a seperate partition and then do a backup to the other partition which also contains program files , email, documents etc.
windows partition only contains windows (I usually allow 5 > 6 gig for windows)
on all systems Ive set up it has never failed me.
Quick note : problems are sometimes related to other things for example, Ive just replaced my 450 watt power supply because my external usb powered hard drive would not work, 5 volt rail was running a little low and therefore causing problems.
i now have a 500 watt quiet power supply which is now working its magic...

P.S. do a google for "how to make a xp boot disk"

it really sounds like a hardware problem to me, could be the motherboard, it aslo could be a number of things as mutanti stated, its very hard to tell.

hmmm i have XP Restore disabled because it never works for me :

ok, another problem...In the bios, for drive boot priority, the only options are IDE-0, IDE-1, SCSI, Removable drive and Network Boot...No Floppy or ATAPI CD...anyone know what's going on here? Selecting Removable Drive makes it try to boot off my Jaz Drive.

I was able to make my own bootable XP install CD, by searching the ITgeeks forums. You can do this from your own hard drive, starting without a XP CD. I might still have the thread somewhere, if you can't locate it on the good ole' WWW!

windows restore isnt going to help these problems!
have you updated your bios recently, it might be currupted
your best be would be taking your pc to a technition, who has the tools to diagnose which piece of hardware is not working properly

You can always buy a postcard off eBay pretty cheap. Best $15- I ever spent. Sounds to me like the motherboard has issues or the BIOS is fubar.

All the info you need on making a bootable XP CD..there are many ways...

I would just reformat the thing since you seem to have so many issues.

making a bootable cd won't do anything, the system is set to boot off IDE-0 first all the time.

What brand and model is the motherboard? Try resetting the BIOS, sounds like it may be the problem.

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, I have cleared the CMOS to get rid of the BIOS password (that i set and forgot)

In fact, I think that all started after that.

Ok, try updating the BIOS...it can be done from floppy or windows on your motherboard, from what I can find in the motherboard manual anyway.

Follow the steps below...sorry about the pics, the pdf file was read only, couldnt even copy text from it...
I would try the ASUS update first (4.1.3), would be the easier option I reckon...
hopefully this should give you back the option to boot from CD or floppy as this BIOS normally does have the option.
