well after reading through a thread today about 48÷2(9+3)
it reminded me of some pointless i had to ask. wel had some boys from aussie come over and stay in our hostel they were in my younger brothers year. Well they hit us all up about the pronounciation of bathurst. we all called it bath-thirst he said bath-thist i know its pointless but when we came over to bathurst everyone pronounced it like we did.

The answer is Bathust. Bath like Path in Pathologist.
Next one will be Newcastle. Castlemaine or Launceston. Speaking of which, anyone visited Condobolin or Canowindra recently? |

I was annoyed watching Top Gear apparently mince Barth-Hurst but, unknown to me at the time, the area was named as Bathurst after a Lord (who's name was pronounced Barth-Hurst).
We've Australianised it to Bathust but now I'll accept either. :P |

My guess would be the original pronunciation was Ba-thurst, then as the aussie accent developed, it turned to Ba-th'st. If we pronounced it the way the Brit's do, it's different again. Barth-urst is what they say.
Regarding the pronunciation of Melbourne, i've always said Melb'n. Any other way sounds very American.

How about MONARO? If it's the car, it's pronounced mon-air-o, but if it's the highway, it's mon-are-o.

Yes, normal, that's it.
The crux of the matter is, who really cares?

Northerners in England would pronounce Bath-urst, if your a southerner it would be Barth-hurst. You can go 20mins down the road in England and have a completely different accent and way of pronouncing things.
Us Brits could get funny about the QLD Maroons. lol, Theres no "W", yet you pronounced it with one. Its Mar-roon not Mar-rown. You get Kangaroo and moon right though, for some reason you dont see fit to add a "W" to the double "O". Why not Kang-ga-row or Moan. Debut is also not De-boo, its Day-bue. Its all in good fun though. lol the Yanks go all out on changing it up though.
