hi all

currently running yokohama A's on the tdci focus

the fronts are looking low after not rotating them properly (still got 50k ish out of them)

anybody got any ideas as to good replacements?

i am happy to just replace them like for like but they were not cheap......

Kumho KU31 is a good value/performance option

I had the original goodyears which did 80000 and 90000kms.
I replaced then with Toyo Teo which we were a lot quieter but lacked grip.
These have now done 70000 and 80000kms-looking at replacing soon with Bridgestone Turanza or Michelin primacy st.
Not sure about the Kumhos maybe other posters can post on their noise grip and life qualities.

I replaced the orignal goodyears with Toyo TEO which this is a big problem.

I got KU31s on my Fiesta, noisy but good grip.

80-90k is massive!!
i havent been rotating mine as often as i could but am finding the grunt from the tdci is murder on tyres

I killed the front two Goodyears in about 25,000km and I didn't corner overly hard in it, which was odd.

Might be the diesel torque on takeoff punishing them.

Most of my drive is 100-110kmhr straight line stuff on motorways. So easy on tyres low cornering use.

Damo-are you saying your toyos lack grip too?

I liked the Toyos on my LV, but they definitely could let go without warning in the wet (especially in a light drizzle after a long dry spell).

Yeah, very easy to push the nose wide or wheel spin even in the dry, I've had them fitted since I replaced the original good years I'm on about 67,000km now and they still have a fair bit of tread on them.

They last ages but they don't grip too well.

I busted one on a gate peg driving out of a mates back yard, punched a hole right through the sidewall when I nicked it, then I drove on the rim home which was just down the road, so I've got one new one on there and I swapped the other three over to the new rims.

When I'm up for new rubber on the Focus I'm considering these three locally:

I might splurge and go for the first ones, apparently they're a really good street tyre. Now that I got all the handling mods done on my car I could probably justify having a higher end tyre on the thing, it barely moves in the corners now.

Yep, 4 cars lol, all registered and on the road, this is my driveway, you can't see the Focus its out on the street:

before the KU31 I used the Toyo Proxes 4 - they are quieter and definitely grippier in the wet and dry but wear out quicker - probably because of the softer compound used.

however the deal braker is that for my 17" Zetec rims they cost 2 x the price of the KU31. the KU31 is excellent for the money and doesn't feel lacking in its own right, just that the Proxes 4 is superior in almost every way besides wear.

Any reason no one considers the Bridgestone RE001? They are supposed to be awesome, but their limited sizing for the Zetec 17s = higher price, combined with the fact they wear out real quick made me scratch them off my list

Thats the trouble with the performance tyres -they dont last.
I do 800 kms a week and buy a new set roughly every 2 years.
I dont performance tyres as I will need to pay more -ie double -and at every 12 months.

I might take the KU31s off the list then, if I get 30,000km out of tyres I'd be happy with that, I drive multiple cars so its not really an issue for me, the Focus only gets used to and from work and on the weekends if I want to blast up Mt Macedon every now and again.

I wasn't aware of Bridgestone RE001, I've only ever used the wheel deal for tyre sizes, do they come in 16"?

no idea mate, you'd have to ask. looks like they were superceded by the RE002 though.

I ran the original Goodyear on mine, then changed to Toyo Proxes 4 when I needed new rubber - these were quieter than the Goodyears and gripped better, but did still tend to let go a bit early on damp cornering - and just a couple of months ago changed again to Michelin Pilot Sport 3 once the Toyos got low on tread. The PS3s are a much better tyre, similar noise though sometimes louder on certain surfaces and then sometimes quieter on others. Grip/braking is MUCH better though.

Quiet, long life and grip in wet.

Had Toyo Teo Plus on my EF and found fine except when they got down
on tread then not as good in the wet. Sold it with cheap Korean brand to
get road worthy done. My new Focus sport has Michlin but have found
that the specific tyre is not being sold in Australia. Michlin not importing
them to here. Why.? Seems silly to have a good tyre on the car sold new
by Ford and cant get them when you want to replace them. Found
Good year on the falcon wore out very quick and Bridgestone were noisy.
Wont be needing new ones for a while so hopefully Michlin will have
something here by then that will replace the ford one.

i tried bob janes and they recommended the new yokohamas

i previously had the a drives on and found them good on grip etc

the replacement model is called blueearth (or something equally poncy)

anybody got any experience of them?

i want to use bob jane as i have a 250 gift voucher there....

they also said the kumho ku22 were pretty good

My experience --
Michelin Pilot Sport 3 on Focus titanium appear to be running very well.

Also have a Mazda 3 --
Currently it also has the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 and these are extremely nice on that car - have been on the car for about a year. Prior to that on the Mazda, I had Yokohama which were recommended by Bob Jane - these were appalling tyres - rough and wore out in next to no time (and I treat my car and tyres very well).

Will never use Yokahame again.

give Achilles a go, their 2233 tyre holds down my 320rwkw decently. also perform better than i expected in the wet

I put on Continental ContiSportContact 2s on, got em from Ebay at $155 a tyre at the time, good tyre.
